PD oiler HELP
« on: December 17, 2015, 10:31:50 »
Hi.
As you will know, in my 45 odd years of riding I have never before had an auto chain oiler, but, I have dragged myself into this century and fitted a PD Oiler.
It works fine, the little light comes on, and the "wick" is wet with oil, however, chain looks dry !!!!. I have done about 100 miles since fitting, and it has rained and rained all the time, so guess some is being washed away, but there is no fling at all on rear wheel. I had the oiler on number two, as that is what I had read somewhere was the best place. So, few questions for those of you that are using one of these.

1) Should the timer be set at a higher rate ( I have just increased it to number 4.
2) will the chain seem dry to look at, I was expecting an "oily" look to it.
3) how long will a full "tank" of oil last, is it hundreds of miles or what.

     Thanks blokes

Did you prime the oiler?

Yes turn it up in order to "get it going". However check it after every ride.

Yes the chain should look "oily" but not dripping

What size tank and which model PD oiler ?

Also check the "wick" does only just touch the chain.

If the wick is out of line the oil just falls on the road and the same can happen if the wick is too long and is then deflected off the chain, when you sit on the bike.

This doesn't last forever, so do it while you can.

Thanks.
Yes, primed the system, the wick is "wet", but I will be honest, its touching the chain when at rest, so should I shorten it ?

The wick should be above the chain 2-3 cm? the chain will bounce while riding and catch it.
Mine (but a mini) was on 5/6 for a week but was throwing a lot of oil off onto the number plate so I turned it down a bit at a time, it is now on 2.
The chain looks wet.
Can't answer for the one you have but the mini reservoir lasted 3000 miles (set on 2) on my trip round Spain & Portugal.
By the way, after a while the wick will get frayed and wear, I changed mine before my trip.

Great thanks, seems I am not giving it much of a chance, I will also trim/adjust the "wick thing" at the weekend so is away from the chain a bit.

Cheers blokes

As per the other comments.

Wick just above (an inch or so) the chain.
Run it high (6-9) for a short trip to get things "wet".
Turn it down (2-3) and leave it there.

The reservoir on the mini is good for >3000 miles.
