Changing chain and sprocket
« on: August 13, 2015, 16:29:29 »
Hi all, Another queries I need an answer for please, I need to change my chain and sprockets on my glee, having taken the plastic cover off by the front sprocket I noticed there is a "ring type thing" that I think the sensor rubs on! Which is in front of the sprocket nut, is it just pushed on? As I have tried to get it off with a puller but it seems very tight and I don't want to break it! Also could you please tell me what size socket fits the nut? Thanks everyone, cheers Tone.

It doesn't rub. It just gets close enough to alter the magnetic field on the sensor. You'll probably need to defeat the thread locker using heat. Did you get the bolt out and it's still stuck or did you not remove the bolt. It shouldn't need a puller. The nut is 32mm but a 1-1/4 inch socket will work fine.

I took the sensor carrier off, exposing the nut with the sensor ring in front of it, but can't get that ring off to get a socket on the nut.

Did you take the #10 allen bolt out from the center of the ring?

Could anyone please tell me if the Allen bolt that holds the speed sensor ring, the one that's in front of the big nut I have to get off to change the front sprocket, is standard thread or left hand? Because it's so tight I don't want to break it by going the wrong way. Cheers Tone.

Just undid mine tonight easily enough, standard left hand thread, 6mm hex key.
Once removed the sensor just falls/pulls off.
I mistakenly thought the sprocket nut was 36mm so could go no further - need a 32mm, I have a feeling it's tight and its dabbed up with stud lock too.....

Careful here,it has to be standard OR left hand thread,it cannot be both.

Good spot, my mistake - standard thread, anticlockwise to undo.

Something is wrong if you're rounding that nut off. Are you using a hexagonal socket? Have you got enough leverage? I use a 4' steel tube over my breaker to get maximum leverage and get it cracked before deformation occurs.

I used a 20" tube! The only thing I can think of is, go around to by mates and get him to weld a wrench on it, and get another bolt!!!

Did you use heat to defeat thread locker? Also, wear on the tool can cause problems. Make sure the tool is in good shape. If I have trouble with an allen bolt, I grind a slot in it and use a hammer impact tool with a straight screwdriver blade.
