MPG
« on: October 27, 2014, 21:52:49 »
Made a mistake the other day and filled up with super unleaded, however the mpg average has gone from 49.1 to 53.8, could the " cheap" stuff be false economy? Any one else made the same mistake or tried the good stuff?
If you think you can, or you think you can't, either way; you're right.

No, but spoke to a chap the other day who always uses the expensive stuff as it doesn't contain ethanol and he found his bikes run better on it. I think I might try it at the next fill up.

Paul/Pete/sorry can't recall your name but do remember you read this forum - if you're reading this jump in and reply if you can.

I only use super unleaded (97 octane) and the bike runs much much better. For the sake of a few pennies it is well worth using. Unfortunately not all petrol stations have them.

Tesco do a 99 octane.

Filled the T5 with the tesco stuff the other day, £1.23 a litre with 6p off a litre. It loves it. :)

The Navigator runs much better and smoother on Shell than the normal Jet rubbish.
To be happy, I don't need private helicopters,a Florida house or a yacht. I'm fine with my motorcycle,a trip to a forest in Bavaria and some lunch money.

I'm averaging about 53MPG with a varied style of riding on normal Shell 95RON but I'm going to try the V-Power next time I fill up. My Wee used to run better on Super Unleaded when we were touring abroad

I occasionally "treat" the bike to a tank of this but I've never really checked the fuel consumption on the bike.

I did a few checks on the car and I definitely thought that the mpg was better. I can't remember the exact numbers but it was probably something like 3% better but the fuel costs 6% more - so I normally just use regular.

54.18 MPG over 6,500 miles. Cheapest fuel when available, not tried above 95 RON but its worth an experiment. That's two up touring, one up with luggage and sporty stuff and light trails. A best of 64 and the worst at 45 MPG that's all from the Road Trip App

My Glee was at 59 MPG last time I looked  :bawl:  am guessing it's due to short amount of trips since I filled up? I always use 95 RON though when I bought the bike the dealer's head mechanic reckoned I should use 98 RON on every 4th fill up to help clean the injectors

you think that's bad...
my K6 650 gets around 55-56 on a good day. 47-48 on a bad one.

on the other hand the mrs' GZ125 gets 100+mpg if you nail it to the wall everywhere.
If I wanted economy over everything else, I'd buy a 125cc scooter

As far as what fuel makes the bike run better is placebo effect on the 650 or older 1000 as the Fuel injection system is not set up to distinguish between the types of fuel and can't adjust to run most efficiently.
The O2 sensor might and I stress might be able to adjust marginally but I'll come down to the rider adjusting their riding style when being more concious about riding more economically.
I'm not sure whether the new 1000 has a fuel system that can respond to a higher or lower octane fuel.

I know many new models are getting systems that can adjust fuelling maps for changes in octane rating. BMW and Honda have been running these sorts of systems for a fair few years.

Might be a question to ask Suzuki.

Doesn't the KTM adventure do this, and if you pay extra has some shit fuel switch you can use when you aren't sure the fuel is up to snuff?

Recently toured north-west Scotland and over 230 miles managed 65.4mpg with the last bar of the guage still to start flashing.   Fully laden with 2-panniers, top-box and kit-bag.  Really pleased.

Been touring Round Spain and Portugal.

With the strong pound against the Euro I always put in the higher octane rocket fuel as I called it.  The seat of my pants told me my Bike was running like a swiss watch, the receipts with litres and miles travelled also worked out really well, and I am now a convert.  I now put in the Tesco stuff(Momentum) in both my cage and Bike. MPG gone up on both(car now 42MPG compared to 38 before)   Bike mid 50's instead of low 50's !
