IMHO buffeting very much depends on the road and weather environment.  I can be very comfortable with no buffeting on a quiet country 2-lane road however as soon as I join a busy main road or dual-carriageway then buffeting can be quite unbearable.  Unless hidden behind a large encompassing Windscreen  (like my old R100RT) then the constant movement of air on the busier roads especially from larger vehicles causes multiple conflicting vortexes that constantly smack the helmet.  I have the standard screen on new v-strom 1000 and looking to upgrade so many of the comments on this thread are most helpful as the upgrade can be an expensive exercise that doesn't always work as I know from previous experienced.  It would be helpful if OEM/aftermarket Windscreen  manufacturers provided wind tunnel clips to help inform our buying decisons!

if anyone has the time and inclination, here's a trick I tried courtesy of a fellow owner in Brisbane.

4 x M5 50mm screws, 8 x nuts to suit, 12 x washers, 4 lock nuts - all stainless steel.  This enabled me to mount the screen 35mm out away from the brackets. The idea is that airflow underneath helps eliminate the buffeting above by equalizing pressure areas.
I can't prove that theory but I have found it a useful mod.
If it doesn't help, you've spent $10 AUD or international equivalent for stuff that will probably be useful one day.

Is the mod similar to this? If so, the threads are M6.

I've got spacer washers on the lower screen mount plus last night I added an MRA flip up doofah...
Old enough to know better, but still too young to care...

I fitted an MRA screen to my DL650 and it was perfect, I now have a DL1000 Desert and so does my son, he just fitted an MRA to his bike and loves it, I think I will be going the same route as I have done 6500 miles with the standard screen and it is driving me mad!

No, M5 threads.
Used the extra unused holes today to make a 22mm bar to span them and accommodate a GPS.  It was a matter of crushing flat each end of a 300mm piece of 22mm tubing so that I had 240mm in between still round, sprayed it black then drilled holes to fit new screws into mounting holes. SatNav is now behind screen about mid height

I did the mod this week. It is definitely an M6 thread on the screen screws.

Yes its 6mm. Done it today, test tomorrow, probably fit the givi air flow Sunday!  It works I just don't like the size of it,  makes the bike feel like a big fat tourer. An illusion I know. I might get the mra, this worked on my tiger1050 but then again not on my fz1!

sorry tallpaul,

yes, M6 for sure. I measured again this morning before going to get some more to fix a cross brace for my GPS.
Thanks, would have been  bugger going back to exchange and not getting the job done today

Tried this mod out today, yes less buffeting but too much noise for me at 80 on the motorway so I guess it's back to the barn door givi airflow for me!
