Paint
« on: June 28, 2015, 20:13:13 »
Hi, yep another question.
When I bought my wee, it had panel damage to both front side panels, just deep scratches into the plastic, I think ex owner used to park next to a low wall, and kept grinding along it. Anyway, went to Halfrauds and bought two tins of their mixed paint, YC2 paint code which is Candy Blue.
I stripped it down and repaired the damage yesterday, and repainted both panels, very pleased with my repairs, cannot see anything, however, colour match was pants, too dark.
I have looked around to see who else sells the paint, and it looks like it could be £50 a tin !!!!, I would need three. Might be cheaper to go to a body shop.
I can live with the mis colour for a while, but my next thought is a full respray and change the colour, maybe silver or red.
Question is, to those that know, should I have used a silver undercoat !!!, the paint in the spray can was not translucant as I expected it to be, just solid colour paint, so cannot see what difference an undercoat would have made, but open to learn

Quote for today, DUCKTAPE, its the force, it has a light side and a dark side, and holds the universe together.

Have you thought about a vinyl wrap?
Might be a lot cheaper to do and be able to change colour/pattern easily when required.
Life is short - You have to enjoy it on a Wee-Strom!

Thanks but being old school, prefer painted surfaces.
I have posted some rather "bad" pictures on "what have you done to your v strom" thread.
I do not know if you can see the colour difference, some lights make it worse than others.
I will live with it for now, and decide what to do, full respray, same colour or change (I have always wanted a bright silver bike !!)
I had a very mis spent youth spraying cars and selling on, so would do all the work myself.

A K6 is a 2006 model year. Blue wasn't available in that year in the USA but I found YC2 on a USA K5. I'll assume YC2 Candy Grand Blue was available on the K6 in the UK and you got the right code or it wouldn't even be close.

All candy colors require a base color, a translucent color overlay and a clear top coat. The Color Rite site at http://www.colorrite.com/product/Suzuki ... e-1739.cfm indeed lists a base coat and a top coat for YC2 and there is no one step paint that will match. The cost of proper paint would be more in line with the higher figure you found.

Thanks grey wolf, I did give them the correct code, as its on the service book that came with the bike. To be honest, when I look at the rear plastics, it looks almost the same, the tank is just a bit lighter, of course it could be that the tank has faded a bit over time, I will live with it, as it looks OK.
However, those nice V-STROM side stickers I bought from e bay are worse than useless, they were put on clean paint, no polish near them, one has already dropped off, the other is on its way, after only two days, they just did not stick. I have a good  sign maker close by who is going to make me a couple, at least I know they will stay on. I suppose you get what you pay for.

How long after the paint job did you apply the stickers. Six weeks is about the minimum wait. Also, the surface has to be shiny smooth for good adhesion.

it was a few days, they are the raised type of decal, and the glue or what ever it is on the back just did not adhere to the clear coat, it was smooth and there was no grease or any wax on it when I applied them, I think it was just a bad adhesive.
The next ones will be the normal flat ones.

New paint outgasses for weeks. The vapor attacks the glue. Let it sit for a while. Mine spent weeks like this

before it looked like this.
