run out of elastic trickery
« on: September 02, 2016, 01:30:48 »
after a good weekend in Wales my v has run out out of elastic trickery
the aa said the rectifier has gone, as my battery is not getting charged
I have been looking at threads and am at a total loss on what people are talking about, so it looks like getting Suzuki garage to collect it and sort it out for me.
where 's my wallet?

The rectifier/regulator is hardly ever a problem. A bad charging system is almost always due to a bad cell in the battery or the stator windings shorting against each other or the engine case.
Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. 2012 DL650A outlasted me.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 (K2-L2) DL1000s. Veek=2014+ (L4+) DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 (K4-L1) DL650s. Glee = 2012+ (L2+) DL650s

Or I read that the magnets on the flywheel shift and the elastic trickery stops coming out.

The OP's avatar shows a Glee. Magnets in the rotor are mainly an issue for early 1000's and not the 650's.

I'd be going with battery has a dead cell.
Anything over 3 years for a motorbike battery is fairly good. Over 5 and its living on borrowed time.

Do you have spare time & a multimeter to perform a few simple tests?
If so we can talk you through what to do.
Multimeters can be bought for less than £10 and are pretty useful things to have.

Suzuki said it would be covered under warranty, so hopefully no problem

Mine is 6 years old... the mrs gsx failed to start today... Yuasa... 3.5 years old.

The strom's replacements lasted 2 years and 3 years...
The original lasted 3 years and needed replacing shortly after I bought the bike.
All Yuasa.

The GSX now has a motobatt. We'll see how long that one lasts.

If your problem is solved under warranty that's a bonus as Suzuki’s stator issues are a bit embarrassing.
With that said I'm going for a faulty stator going on experience but hope it's just the battery which would mean you would get your bike back quickly but would like to know once the problem is fixed. As already said though the problem can be easily diagnosed with a few simple checks using a meter.
