Running-in period for the 2015 (<2012) DL650 V Strom
« on: May 23, 2015, 08:01:53 »
Hi blokes! I'm new here so I don't know if I'm doing the right thing but here we go (<that's what she said)

I've just bought myself the new 2015 wee Strom and will be collecting it the afternoon that I pass my test (6th of July if you'd like to know)

My question is what is the running in period? I respect and understand those who believe a "hard break in" is better etc but I'd like to know what Suzuki suggest! My dealer told me that it's no more than 5k revs to start with and obviously he usual, so don't keep the revs the same, keep using the gearbox and as much of the Rev range, no labouring, no high revs...... But how long does this last for?? Like 1000 miles? I imagine this information will be in the start of the owners manual but I haven't got that yet!!

Thanks for your help, ride safe.

:welcome:

If I remember, less than 5,000 for 600 miles,  then 1st service. Then 7,500 - 8,000 revs to 1,000 miles. Then ride as you want (I think officially the handbook says to keep it under 10,000 revs period)

Good luck with the test  :thumb:

I did 5K up to 500 miles, then 6K to 600, 7K to 700, 8K to 800, 9K to 900 and max at 1000 miles.

Obviously varying the revs and gears where possible.

Spot on - I'm through the 600 miles and first service now and upped the revs - grinning like a loon

great thank you blokes! I'm so excited it's unbelievable, I've been on my Varadero 125 for 2 years and a ts50x for a year before that so I'm REALLY looking forward to a bit of power :)

oh! dear my bike will never be run in as I have never taken it over 7000 RPM.
This doesn't last forever, so do it while you can.

My bike has been over 7,000 revs on some recent roads in Scotland  :auto-dirtbike:  :auto-dirtbike:  helps make some good overtakes out of the bends   :thumb:

I believe (was told) that the engine has been run sufficiently in the factory and it's just the transmission that needs to bed in. Hence gently to begin, short shifting but no real stress through the gear box, then increase the load without over stretching in any gear before 1000 miles (1,600 kms here).  :)
So how's it going so far then?

Worst thing to do is "lug" the engine, ie too high a gear for the engine to be able to accelerate easily is my view.

A few hundred rpm over the handbook limit a few miles before the next milestone never killed an engine / transmission. Doing 2000rpm in 6th gear trying to climb a 10% hill will make the engine / gearbox / chain etc very unhappy.
