FI Light, C65 error
« on: May 03, 2015, 23:11:09 »
So I posted the other day about my gear position sensor being wonky, often showing no gear.

Ahead of replacing it I put my bike in dealer mode and went for a ride, took about 35 miles before the FI light came on with a C65 code - which is listed as idle speed out of range, which is odd as I was doing 40 in 5th at the time, letting engine braking slow me into a 30 zone.

Haynes book is useless for this code it seems, service manual lists Air passage clogged, STVA is fixed, Idle speed malfunction, Air leakage or ECM malfunction as possible causes. The bike idles fine, and seems to be running fine, fuel economy hasn't changed.

Probably just going to take it to a dealer as I can foresee myself just throwing money at parts if I work on it myself.

edit - I should add, I've searched this forum and others, my clutch operation is normal also, safety switch is doing it's thing so I don't suspect that.

What is you idle speed and what was the rev counter registering when you had the FI?

Hi Grey Wolf,

Idle is about 1200, a little over maybe, I pulled over right away when it came on today - left it idling while I looked up the code, felt totally normal while stood still... I'll check again in the morning though. When it came on I guess I was at about 3k, not 100% sure though - it stayed on until I got home, turning off and on again clears it, but it comes back within a few miles.

btw, when searching various v-strom things I've come to appreciate just how much you have contributed to the various communities - just wanted to say: thanks!

1200rpm is the minimum idle speed. If it drops below that for any length of time worth talking about, you'll get a C65. It looks like it may also happen if the ISC Valve setting falls out of range even if you aren't at idle. Try a reset of the ISC valve.

1) Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
2) Remove the seat.
3) Put the bike in dealer mode. http://www.vstrom.info/Smf/index.php/topic,7061.0.html
4) Turn the ignition switch to the ON position.
5) Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
6) Then, wait more than 5 seconds.
The ISC valve automatically is set at the PRE-SET position.
7) Take the bike out of dealer mode.

Following the above cleared the fault, but it returned after a few miles.

I've finally got round to replacing the gear position sensor (well, paying someone else to as it needed some other things doing also that I didn't fancy doing myself). The C65 has not returned during a 500 miles bank holiday weekend.

So here's one for the community knowledge chest  & future googlers - faulty gear position sensors (as in frequently reading blank on the dash) can cause C65's FI errors on DL650's
