rear wheel knock
« on: September 14, 2014, 21:50:43 »
Wheeling my K9 Wee back last night the normal click of the chain on sprocket was accompanied by an unusual knocking sound. After putting the bike on the centre stand and rotating the wheel backwards I was able to identify the knock as being near the rear sprocket. The sound, though not loud, was accompanied by a vibration of the chain. The knock didn't occur when the wheel was rotated forwards. Both front and rear sprockets and chain appear to be in good order.  The wheel seems to have no play in it. I'm wondering if this might be a wheel bearing issue. Any thoughts?

See if you can lift the rear caliper up. Its carrier might not be keyed to the swingarm.
Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. 2012 DL650A outlasted me.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 (K2-L2) DL1000s. Veek=2014+ (L4+) DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 (K4-L1) DL650s. Glee = 2012+ (L2+) DL650s

You normally hear a tight link on the front sprocket first due to it's smaller diameter.

Check the sprocket bearing, you will need to remove the back wheel to check properly. The bearing is housed in the sprocket side of the cush drive.
Should have no play and be smooth when rotated.

Thanks for the replies. The issue was resolved today when the bike was taken in for a service. The chain had been overtightened a touch when my new tyres were fitted.

Better a slack chain than a tight one, I think that was the cause of a rear sprocket carrier bearing going on my last Yamaha.  :shy:

So how's it going so far then?
