Engine Cutting out!
« on: July 11, 2014, 19:40:40 »
I recently did a weekend trip to Ypres and during my ride from Portsmouth - Dover the bike started cutting out and only really got better after she had been left standing for app 30 minutes.

I've grudgingly booked her in for a check up at Crescent Honda in Bursledon on Monday.

My question is:  Do you think a change of spark plugs would fix the problem?

My thought is, she heats up and the gap on the plugs increases causing inconsistent sparking!

Does that sound too far fetched and should I rely on the stealers to fix her without charging me the earth! :shy:  :angry-tappingfoot:

I wouldn't have thought plugs would cause this, be nice if it was. I would check clutch switch, side stand switch, kill switch and fuel filter.

I'm not a strommer but I think there will be a method for checking fault codes.
To be happy, I don't need private helicopters,a Florida house or a yacht. I'm fine with my motorcycle,a trip to a forest in Bavaria and some lunch money.

I know that iridium 8 in a glee causes problems as they should be 9s so check plugs in case. There is something on site about this.

Do you mean cut out as in a misfire when riding at constant throttle?

I'd think spark plugs are unlikely to be the culprit, but I've heard of coils failing in a manner that they will cause problems when they heat up. Other issues could be related to the crank shaft or cam position sensors. Obviously damaged spark plug caps and leads can also cause issues with loss of spark.

There is an ignition circuit inspection flow diagram in the manual in page 7-17 onwards.

Are you sure it's not just bad fuel? It could be something as simply as having filled up at a dodgy place where there was lots of water in the fuel.

Well, she started doing it again on my way to work this morning, Guess I'll have to bite the bullet and take her to Bursledon (If anyone who works there is reading this, be nice).

Took her out for an afternoon spin;  Noticed that when it starts playing up (stalling) and I open the petrol cap, the problem disappears    so it looks like the issue may be something to do with a vacuum in the tank :GRR:

Suppose I could just leave it open and put a sock over it :neen:  :shy:

Sounds like a pinched or blocked air breather tube under the tank.

The DL1000 has a vented filler cap rather than a breather hose.
Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. 2012 DL650A outlasted me.

I had a look for the hole in the cap, there was a tiny wee one but don't know where it surfaces.

There should be a one way valve in the cap that may be clogged up. I saw a post somewhere with a dis-assembly procedure but I don't remember where.

Well,

Took her into CRESCENT, Honda:

Recieved this reply "Your bike needs New Plugs, replacement fuel filter, exhaust gasket ( it's blowing at the seal) and a new air filter".

Told him I got a new air filter from them just before christmas, oh well we'll have a look again to see if it's clogged.

When asked total cost for repairs he said £550. minimum

Oh and he also said "Once we do these replacements and if it's still faulty we'll get it in again. to see what else we can change.

So, I spend £550 on repairs and then they carry out another diagnosis :angry-tappingfoot:
I think not, got the bike back and will do the stuff myself :bawl:

£120.00 spent so far :bawl:  :bawl:

First thing to do is to find out how to make sure the tank vent is clear. The procedure to check the fuel pump is described in the Suzuki manual along with how to remove it and clean the filter. It looks quite straight forward. You could test it's output with the tank cap on and then off to find out if the tank vent is blocked. Replacing the plugs and air filter is only a few quid to do DIY. How Crescent Honda dreamed up this figure of £550 for starters is a mystery. Perhaps they just replace the pump rather than clean the filter. I imagine they don't want to over work themselves.....
