Power load for fog lights - need advice
« on: March 09, 2014, 11:09:23 »
I'm trying to find some not expensive "fog" lights. Found quite a few but they're all 55W each. Before I order, I need to know if I could put 110W extra load on my Glee, as I want to run them day and night. Of course, installation would be done through relay and fuse, and power from the battery.
I also found good LED ones but I don't want them to be different color from main beam, and all LED ones are "Cool White", which means 6000K or over.
I've searched and found LED bulbs H3 "Warm White" 2700K (5-10W) but their size is huge and I doubt they'd fit into housing.
So, a bit of a mess...
The simpliest way would be a pair of 55W/H3 lights. I understood heated grips are arround 50W so I guess connecting 110W to heated grips connector is too much. But that doesn't metter as I can put some extra effort and do propper wiring from scratch.
So, can I put 110W extra load on my Glee?
Thanks

You have about 125-150 extra watts available over 3000rpm. If you do a lot of idling in heavy traffic, you'll be discharging at those points. I think every bike should have a voltmeter mounted to monitor the charging system. 12.6-12.8V is the break even area. Above that and the system is charging. Below that and the battery is discharging.

Just found H3 bulbs 35W to order. I guess if I get foglights with H3 55W and replace the bulbs, that will be the right way to go.

Bosnjo  , have a wee look here . Mega bright lights for a total power consumption of 14 watts.

As I said in the first post, all the mess is because I want arround 3000K lights to mach the color of bike's headlights and yours are arround 6000K.

Change your headlight bulbs for cool white and it opens all sorts of led , Cree low wattage lights up to you . Personally I believe that the two colours make the bike more visible but each to their own .

Are they any good? I didn't know there were H3 20W. I thought there were only 55W and 35W.

Thanks, so, decided to go with H3 lights and then change bulbs. Just have to decide between 35W and 20W.

Greywolf, do you think I'd be OK with 70W total (2x35W)?
I don't use my bike on idle, almost never. Rare traffic light and that's all. I don't have any other extra consumer on my bike, like heated grips or so. I also don't want to shorten the life of my stator.
I'm also thinking of removing W5W side bulbs as they are not mandatory here and I can gain extra 10W on total charge.

The system will easily handle that.
