Rusty front fork inners.
« on: March 10, 2014, 22:01:07 »
I've done a stupid thing.
After commuting daily on my beloved Wee (K7), I put it away under a waterproof cover after spraying the whole bike with ACF50 (or so I thought)!
When I uncovered it after admittedly longer than I'd anticipated, it started first time but the wheels were very stiff.
When I looked the bike over closely, I have rust on both front fork inners, up high under the fairing / cowling.
It looks quite bad and, after re-coating it liberally with more ACF50, it looks like I've screwed up.
I'm gutted!

As long as the rust isn't in the fork travel area then you should be OK from an operational standpoint. It might look a bit unsightly but you may be able to polish some of it away using solvol autosol or similar.

Try not to get too down about it.

It's only metal, nuts and bolts and can always be fixed :thumb:

I know of a place that will rechrome them both for just £75 :) They did my forks and it was a good job too.

Aye - those waterproof covers can be a curse, any water vapour gets trapped in them, unless there's plenty of draught    Might not be pitted, though, like wal says, a good rub with solvol or similar?

Mine are looking a bit rusty as well. All that riding through floods, wind and rain over the last few months has taken its toll. I heard somebody say that getting a bit of scrunched up foil and rubbing them over with that and a bit of oil/gt85/acf50 could help. I've yet to give it a go, but will let you know what happens when I do...

I wrote about the aluminium foil removing rust.

Looks like its under the chrome...some wet&dry paper and Colonel Juvecu's Patented Silver Foil Embrocation is called for!

Thanks blokes.
I'll try the ACF50 and aluminium foil thing.
Stay tuned for either smiles or tears!

Chris.

Don't use sandpaper to start with, just the foil and some ACF50 or WD40 or some light oil. You'll need to protect it afterwards and ACF50 is best for that. Fork gaiters make a big difference, particularly if you put some ACF50 on before you put the gaiters on.

I used super fine wire wool and loads of Muck-off Miracle Shine on my 125 cruiser's rims and it worked a treat to remove rust (just rubbed very lightly) +1 on loads of ACF-50 afterwards
