I've realised it's overpriced
« on: December 08, 2013, 18:56:16 »
I'm a fan of the DL1000 - I think it looks great - its lighter than the competition, economical, powerful and I think the integrated luggage looks great.

I even thought it was reasonably priced and I've stayed out of the threads where it is declared overpriced - until now.

now, I know 'we' don't like BMW's over here and I know this isn't the same class of bike - but I want one of these so bad it hurts a little:

http://www.BMW-motorrad.co.uk/motorcycles/roadster/BMW-s-1000-r/

Its the same price - actually as its £9,990 tag is OTR, its actually cheaper.

top quality suspension, tested WSB chassis - 160BHP and looks fantastic (to me anyway)

I know you won't all agree with this - but you have to admit - it makes the DL1000 look overpriced?

I bet its a monster!

tell you what else it does - it makes a mockery of Aprillias £12,500 V4 Tuono - also a great sporty naked, but that BMW makes the tuono look very overpriced.

I think I'll forward that link to my brother in the hope he buys one so I can ride it...

It does nothing for me, geekay. Again, horses for courses, innit? I wouldn't use the extra power it has over the Veek (certainly not for top-end), and the riding position would have my back crocked within 20 miles, for starters.
So, IF someone (hint) were to give me £10,000 - I'd buy the Veek.

But yes - its overpriced

fair enough - but if you think that looks like a bad riding position - then consider its a replacement for my ZX636 B1h and suddenly it has gold-wing comfort! (if gold wings are comfortable!)

I'm seriously tempted - I ever-so-nearly bought the rocket centre's (Blackburn aprilia dealer) ex-demo tuono in the summer - it had a few thousand miles and was still over £11k - glad I didn't now (although I'd have enjoyed the aprilia over the summer!)

Ahh! I see what you mean! You've got some serious window-shopping to do, there's some fantastic bikes at that sort of money...

My back twinges just looking at the RR! But if yours doesn't Geekay, why not go for it while you can! :)

I think I actually prefer the S1000R naked model - its a fair bit cheaper and has a revised engine - lower power at a mere 160BHP - but actually more torque than the RR and of course a comfier riding position and its cheaper!

Yeah, I could be wrong having not actually ever ridden one... but I get the impression that these 200bhp inline-4 sportsbikes mean "200bhp available if you're always revving it up fairly close to the redline." For my riding style, I'm not sure I would spend enough of my time around that bit of the rev range to take full advantage of it.

Sure, there are times when I do rev the Glee up to near the redline, but I would say in 95% of my riding I'm never much beyond 7500rpm... so for me I'm more interested in performance up to 7500rpm than I am in performance from 7500rpm upwards.

In other words, of the two, I'd take the naked one as well as it sounds like it'll be better at lower revs even if it doesn't make as much peak HP at high revs.

you should try a litre sports bike if you haven't ridden one.

Although in your head you are thinking that the 200bhp is all at the redline (and in figures this is correct -) the truth is that even at lower and mid-range the litre bikes are amazingly powerful!

Try a crossplane R1 - it'll simply blow you away with just how much 'go' it has - at pretty much any revs. In particular if you have perhaps (not saying you have) just passed your test and ridden only a strom-type bike - it will re-calibrate your brain on the meaning of the word 'performance'. or a zx10... or a blade... or a GSXR...

But who will pay for the intensive physiotherapy that a big, fat bloke such as myself will need after experiencing the sportsbike riding position??  :)

I test rode the K1200R a while back, it was very addictive, especially doing 30mph in third and nailing the throttle when you hit the NSL sign. Definitely a licence / life loser if you didn't keep an eye on reality.

:text-yeahthat:  I test rode a K1200R Sport before getting the Vee, it was a hoot! I was all set to part with the cash....then I remembered why I was selling my R1100RT...and stopped myself. BMW had already had thousands of my pounds in breakdown costs & I didn't want to repeat the experience.

Had a brill test ride though, nailing it ourt of a roundabout produced a black line of rubber as the rear spun up...very addictive, very grin inducing and I was hooked, but the reliability issues (K12's are bad for the camchain jumping teeth on the sprocket....KER-CHING!) saw me on the Vee path to biking bliss....

I agree with geekay I would spend the money on that BM if I was looking for that kind of bike, but it does make the new Vee look expensive.
