Marks on Black Plastic Dash
« on: October 16, 2013, 15:31:04 »
Decided to remove the sticky label off the black plastic dash beside the display on my 3 month old Glee. It was not at all easy and I had to resort to Halfords Sticky Stuff Remover and a plastic scraper. Now it's off I am left with a very slightly roughened area, where the label was, which is noticeable. I have tried Turtle Wax "Black in a Flash" Bumper & Trim Treatment Gel, but the mark is still visible. Anyone got any suggestions? Wish I hadn't bothered! Also there are another 2 labels on the tank, which would need to be removed if I want to buy one of the Forum's tank protector logos.

Use heat to soften the remaining stickers before you peel them off in one piece. A hair dryer or marigold glove containing hot water draped over the sticker before you peel works a treat.

+1 for hairdryer/heat gun. Just enough heat to soften the sticker though. Once the body of the sticker is off you will probably have some glue marks. Heat these gently and then use an old sticker or insulating tape (old sticker is best) and 'dab' the glue residue with it. This will lift off the remaining glue. Time consuming but worth it.

I did exactly the same. Covered it with an IAM badge. Perhaps you've got a club badge or something?

Hair dryer worked well for me on all but the tank stickers which were a real pain to get off - and I managed to scrape the paint doing it. Fortunately where I could cover it with a tank pad......

What are the max dimensions of  the vinyl decal as there isn't much room on the RHS of the dash. I was hoping someone would have a solution for removing the marks. I remember a paint shop suggesting black shoe polish to cover marks on a plastic car bumper, but I haven't tried that yet.

I also had real trouble with the tank one and left a scratch (only a little one but it annoyed me) so I covered it with a tank pad
I'm sane, honestly. . . I got a certificate to prove it!
