Trade in shocker
« on: January 14, 2014, 18:21:58 »
Just been quoted £2600 trade in for my 2012 vstrom. Got 11,500 miles on it but, still.
I thought dealers looked to make about £500 on a used bike. Surely they'd be cashing in on about £1400.
Anyone been quoted any better ?

Some specialist dealers will work to £500 but larger dealers will want to make £1000 minimum. Best advice is stick with the bike you have. I mean, a 2012 V Strom is a great bike and you're simply suffering from what most of us have - new bike syndrome (usually happens just about this time of year).

If you must sell at this time of year (not the best) then try privately. Yes, you will get people coming to see the bike who just want a day out and to kick some different tyres but you will get more dosh for it.

This wisebuyer guide is reckoned to be quite accurate.

Change it to your model if I got it wrong

That is an interesting site. What is more interesting is that my Glee is an 11 plate - owned by Suzuki for reviews etc so registered before the main stock hit the dealers.
Got it with 500 miles on it and £1300 off the price, with added touring screen, undercowling and hand guards and 500 mile service/check-up.
Just couldn't pass it up, haven't regretted it for a single second.

Keep it. I intend to run mine into the ground. It's the one & only bike I'll ever buy new. Treated myself as I'd saved hard.
I intend to get at least 12 years out of it.......that way the only winner is me!! :thumb:

I traded my Yamaha XJ6 (brief 3 month post-DAS mistake, before seeing the light and getting the Glee) in at a dealer for a bag of peanuts or similar. Walked past the dealer a few days later, they were selling it for not far off what I paid for the brand new Glee!

Lesson learnt here... never trade in, always sell privately!

You've had some bad luck with that bike, though, Arfurloin, I can understand your frustration. You need to try other dealers, don't look desperate, lust over a bike they have and let them approach you about your bike!
Alternatively get yours sorted (sounds like you're on the way to that) and you might not have such trouble for years to come...most don't (have trouble that is!)

Learned my lesson long ago, I privately sell the old vehicle, unless like my wife's old car, it is only worth scrap value, then I am happy to trade it in to save me the hassle of scrapping it.
Now on a Super Tenere having put 64k miles on a 2011 DL650

I like mine so much they would have to offer me at least what I paid for it before I even considered trading it in.

that's exactly what I did, I reckon I'll get 100,000 plus out of it which is good value for money plus its one of the most economical machines out there so the savings on fuel will be an added bonus, keep it mate  :)
