Glee centre stand?
« on: October 09, 2013, 15:37:47 »
Right, the time has finally arrived where I can afford a centre stand which should come as standard, however that is a different argument.

Should I go for OEM stand or Sw Motech?

There is a 40 quid difference in price in favour of the motech one, however it does appear to have a much narrower stance and I don't want the thing falling over on it.

Any help appreciated.

I have yet to hear of any bike falling over sideways when on a centre stand. They go forward first. I have read of a couple of reports of an SW-Motech stand being too easy to push forward but I've had three of them on three DL650s including the present Glee and they are solid. AN OEM or clone will ground first on a left turn and comes with a long footpeg feeler as a warning measure. The SW-Motech has a cross bar near the pivot that reduces the straight up and down ground clearance compared to OEM.
Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. 2012 DL650A outlasted me.

If anybody thinks their bike comes off the stand too easily, just grind a little metal off the contact stop points.

That's a copy of the SW-Motech stand. All the pipes are straight and there is that rectangular cross brace near the pivot.

Just fitted a Genuine Suzuki Centre Stand to my Glee, 45 mins to fit, £155 with a little negotiation from
my friends at Padgetts, was looking at non genuine ones and they looked flimsy and not quite right
to me, keep your Suzuki 100% Suzuki. lol

You mean like this one? I've never heard of an SW-Motech stand breaking due to the straight tubing used throughout. I have seen reports of a few Suzuki stands breaking at the area shown.

Strictly speaking this post should be sub titled "oh Sh*t".

I rode my intruder into my garage to park it next to the Glee.
Just as I stopped, the intruder's crash bar contacted the Glee's footrest.
It was just a light tap but the Glee rolled forward off it's SW-Motech centre stand and I only just caught with my right hand it before it could topple over.
Just as I was thinking "cor that was close" I realised I was in bit of a bind.
The intruder was still in gear and the engine was running with the clutch lever pulled to the bar.
The Glee was covered to the floor with an Oxford bike cover.
Given that, with two feet down, I find it tricky just keeping one bike upright, keeping the two up was beyond scary. Having my helmet on and visor down led to my glasses steaming up so I could not actually see much.
I had to stand on my right leg and use my left boot to push the intruder's side stand down: that stopped the engine and freed up my left had and improved my reach to the Glee.
I thought about getting off the intruder from the 'wrong side' while still keeping the glee up but when I tried it I realised I was not sure it would work. I had to work my right boot under the Oxford cover and feel around for the Glee's side stand. Eventually I managed this and I let the glee over slowly onto the stand and then I could get off the intruder's right side and breath one big sigh or relief.

greywolf is quite right about applying a grinder to the centre stand 'stop' but it was one of those jobs I was going to do but didn't get around to yet. I now leave more space between the two bikes when parking.

I would never use the centre stand with the bike facing  ( even slightly) down hill
This doesn't last forever, so do it while you can.

after lots of fun tryin to oil the chain, apply acf 50 and clean the bike, I decided to use a abba stand wiv sv 650 adaptors. result not much fun and I only have it wen at home so think its time for a genuine Suzuki centre stand. local dealer, bill smiths chester, has offered me one at £167.50, any ideas where I can get a better deal.
thanks tighthead

Brockett, if I was there I'd have been no help, laughing and holding my phone steady while videoing would be about all I could have managed.
