Problem with Engine Cutting out
« on: September 16, 2013, 11:43:16 »
My strom has started to cut out on me whilst riding
It happens after a good run and as I'm slowing down it just cuts out
No warning  nothing on dial plenty of fuel all oil water etc at right level it's not long had a service
And it starts again easily whilst rolling.. on the starter. It just cuts no warning

Sounds suspiciously like an electrical gremlin ? Check the usual suspects like side stand cut out switch, clutch cut out switch and get a squirt of contact cleaner into the ignition barrel too as they can carbon up. Best of luck.

That's often a sign of a bad TPS.
Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. 2012 DL650A outlasted me.

If it's out of kilter it can/will cause poor running. It usually manifests itself as really 'lumpy' running below about 3,000 rpm and a poor tickover.

Bad tps ??

I had the same problem the other day, removed theTRE and the problem hasn't come back.  :)  failing that, it could be bad fuel or a blockage somewhere. :-x

had the same issue when I did a service and moved the TPS at some point, ran OK but would cut out.

Also make sure the idle is set high enough.

Yes. That and the TPS are the two biggest reasons an engine will die with the clutch disengaged.

It's #7. The #2 screw is in a slot. The adjustment is made by rotating the TPS on its locating pin and tightening the screw. It's a delicate adjustment. A tiny change in position makes a big change in results. See http://www.stromtrooper.com/v-strom-ser ... l1000.html but be aware my early post is mistakenly for a 650. A TPS problem often means the TPS needs to be replaced rather than adjusted.

There is no real way to test a TPS. It's basically a potentiometer with a wiper moving on a variable resistor. With use, the resistance at a point the wiper often rests wears and what wears off dirties up the area so the resistance isn't steady and the ECU gets bad information. When the engine doesn't want to work properly, turning off the ignition and running the throttle stop to stop a few times may "clean" the contact point and temporarily fix the problem. If that can be demonstrated, replace the TPS for sure. Otherwise, a TPS problem will not reliably show itself by tests or FI display. Replace and see if it helps is the next step.
