brake pads .... again
« on: September 07, 2013, 15:50:17 »
following my previous note about brake pads and the shreiking / groaning noise at low speed.

I cleaned the brakes with aerosol cleaner and this seemed to get rid of the noise - but a quick ride out the other night showed it was back, albeit much reduced.

I nearly went out and got some more pads, but thought I'd inspect the fitted ones first - removing the pads and cleaning up the calipers / pads etc.

here's what I saw:

OK - not great photos on my phone, but they don't look exactly "worn out" to me - do they?

by my eye, with my metal ruler, there is just shy of 4mm on the pads - uniform across the pad. Probably around 3.8mm if my eye works OK!

They are original pads - made by Tokico if you remove the stainless steel heat shrinks.

Not much copper grease on them - should there be more? any tips for ensuring the brakes are put back together in tip-top shape (or at least "as good as it gets"!)

Copper grease all the points of contact with the caliper and pistons.

Any wiser as to the cause? Any odd marks on the discs?

The pads are okay for thickness until a groove is bridged. Plenty is left.
Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. 2012 DL650A outlasted me.

Bit of copper or aluminium graphite grease on the back of the plates might help with the squeal. Just a thin layer where the pistons would touch, no need to cover the whole thing (draw two circles with the grease and put the pad back in.)
