sump bolt torque is it 21 or 23 nm
« on: August 30, 2013, 07:17:28 »
Hello,

So I have a vstrom DL 10 reg, The handbook states for the sump bolt, tighten it, great !
I've googled this and come up with two possible figures: 21 and 23.

Which is the right figure, or does it not matter. Just do not want to over tighten, bit paranoid that's all.

Thanks

DT

It'll be snug by 12nm, so 21 will be fine.  Your torque wrench likely has an error margin of 5 either way anyway.

The Suzuki manual for the Vee says 23N-m. Suggest you down load the 650 one and check it in there.

K9 is closest to yours in age (It's the year before) - but is there any difference in the quoted value between the two manuals?

I always use 21Nm after cleaning the thread on the bolt well. Also pay attention to feel, if it feels too tight while you're doing it up, stop because it just needs to seal properly without being loose enough to vibrate out. It's much easier to check for leaks by looking at the floor under the bike before each ride (and nip it slightly tighter if needed) than to have to Helicoil the drain hole.

+1. Use a torque ratchet if you like, but don't just follow blindly, if it feels too tight then stop.

I had to do this recently on my brothers Hornet, the front brake caliper bolts weren't getting to the click, 30nm from the owners handbook, so I turned the torque down to 28, then 26 and got the click, I was happy with that as they were copper greased.

It's 23Nm for the Vee and 21Nm for the Wee and they are good numbers for the purpose. Keep your head in the process when using a clicker torque wrench. Don't blindly trust it. I've seen people store them without zeroing them, sacking the spring, or forget to set them before use.
Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. 2012 DL650A outlasted me.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 (K2-L2) DL1000s. Veek=2014+ (L4+) DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 (K4-L1) DL650s. Glee = 2012+ (L2+) DL650s

Store them loaded and you might as well get your kids to torque up your bolts
