7000 miles between oil changes!
« on: August 26, 2013, 17:05:12 »
I recently went to look at a 09 wee for sale with 15000 miles on it. The bike is in very clean condition, certainly much cleaner than mine was at that mileage. It has service stamps and invoices at 600,3500,7700 and then nowt till an oil change at 15000!. The bike has had one owner, comes in GT spec and on looks alone seems to have never seen wet or winter conditions. The salesman has agreed to carry out the valve clearances and put in new plugs as part of the sale. Thing is I really like the look of this bike but am very concerned that 7300 miles between oil changes may have caused damage to the engine. My previous 07 wee was serviced every 3500-4000 miles with valves at 15k and 30k. It never let me down in 40000 miles apart from the 6 year old battery dying.   Any advice!!

Just because the book isn't stamped does not mean the oil hasn't been changed. If the owners been keeping on top of the bike cosmetically it's a good bet it's been looked after mechanically. He's probably done and oil & filter change himself at some point to save a few quid. I wouldn't mark the service book if I had done that.

It would be extraordinary if there was any damage to the engine because of that.

I do all my own services and write what I did in the service book. That is what it is there for, a record of service, regardless who performed it

+3 the Suzuki interval is a **** take. Unless you intend to keep it for 20 years just extract the best deal you can and go for it.

I wouldn't worry too much if it has gone 7000 between changes if everything else is in order.  Steve Mortimer on VSRI went to Timbuktu and back without an oil change a few years ago and his Wee is still going strong.  There is a thread on VSRI somewhere but I'm too idle to look for it.

I must admit the short service interval on these bikes seems way out for a liquid cooled motor running on synthetic oil.

I do all my own work and I never write it in the service book. I keep it in my, much better, spreadsheet along with a myriad of other information about anything that's been done to the bike.

Even if it wasn't serviced for 7300 miles I wouldn't worry too much about it, one long interval like that isn't going to cause much trouble in the long run.
