Problem re-fitting handguard
« on: August 11, 2013, 19:12:42 »
My fault as I was not paying enough attention when I took it off.

Glee L3 left hand side knuckle guard

I find I have

4 washers
3 nuts (one dome headed)
two spacers
one bolt with a fixed hex

Try as I may I cannot put it all back together and be satisfied that it is all in the right place

I have looked at some line drawings but they do not show how the guard is mounted and I have more washers.

Has anyone got a decent drawing or photo of none correctly fitted?

This shows the order.

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. 2012 DL650A outlasted me.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 (K2-L2) DL1000s. Veek=2014+ (L4+) DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 (K4-L1) DL650s. Glee = 2012+ (L2+) DL650s

Thanks greywolf very useful.
I think maybe an extra washer was put in by dealer who originally fitted it.

It still bothers me that the left side is so complicated and the right is so simple.

That's mostly due to a redesign of the clutch lever switch in 2010 because the old one caused too many problems. Changing some rather than all of the tooling saved money but increased complexity.

What changed, I can't see the difference to my K5?

ps. Which fiche site do you use? They seem to have complete instead of composite pictures.

I use the large image button for models at at http://www.mrcycles.com/
http://www.mrcycles.com/fiche_select2.a ... ggOIKw2N8F is the site for the 2012 DL650 for example.

Pre 2010 clutch switch

Much bigger 2010 and later clutch switch.

I thought you meant the handguard fixing bolt was different on the clutch side.

It is. That is required to clear the bigger clutch switch.

Ah! that may be why the clutch lever does not appear to be central in the guard.
Maybe they reduced the clearance at the top to gain space at the bottom and clear the modified switch.

The top spacer is not shown in any drawings.
The top of the bolt is fitted with a dome headed nut that looks nice but seems to be only decorative.

I am concerned that the bolt's plain shoulder on which the clutch lever pivots does not extend fully into the pivot and this will cause wear in the lever.

I think maybe I'll look at this again.

All this due to fitting up and back risers and B'king handle bars. Standard Glee bars twist my wrists somewhat.

Hello ho!

Each time I write the word Glee
this, in brackets, appears.

It's Mr. Rat's latest attempt at getting better search engine ratings.

Gleeful gets through  :lala:

On my Suzuki handgaurds, which I've taken off and put back on a few times, I added a plastic spacer on the clutch side so that I wouldn't be able to overtighten the nut.

It makes my sig look like a mess. On the other hand, since an explanation is no longer needed, I can trim it.
