disconnecting battery - reason for concern?
« on: August 01, 2013, 11:27:53 »
Hi - I've bought a fused, switched, hard-wire (direct to battery) USB power lead for the bike - to power the sat-nav for a tour.

Is there a reason I should be concerned on disconnecting the battery? will it reset anything on the dash? (other than the clock probably)

just checking before I proceed.

edit - oh - it's a 2011 650 strom - the older 'wee' shape - if that makes any odds?

thanks,
g

No. Disconnect negative first and reconnect last. Nothing should reset or break, they're designed to be disconnected.

The Glee will "save" the clock for quite a while. The Wee, not as long.
Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. 2012 DL650A outlasted me.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 (K2-L2) DL1000s. Veek=2014+ (L4+) DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 (K4-L1) DL650s. Glee = 2012+ (L2+) DL650s

I bought one of them. Bloody wires were not long enough.

This one is pretty good actually. It's switched and fused and comes with waterproof connectors. Plenty long enough.  I'll post some pics of you like?

Yes. All odometer readings are in non volatile memory.

before greywolf had confirmed - I went out to check - and yes - they are both as they were!

Not much to see really - here's a couple pics - its a 12 - 5v regulator as sold on ebay - it's an "ultimate add-ons" type, cost £24. I have to say I am impressed with the quality - very well put together, feels substantial for the money and nice waterproof plugs for the "final" lead part.

Under the seat - you can see the direct connection to the battery on the terminals, then I have done the best I can to hide the wiring - the fuse is behind the other fuses just to the rear of the battery, then the cable goes up into the underseat storage compartment. I have velcro'ed the 12/5v box into the section just under the seat catch-bridge thing (hope that makes sense). If you look, it sticks out to the rear of the bridge and you can even see a little LED which lights up green when the thing is switched on (it isn't 'on' at time of this picture).
The on/off switch is a rubberised, weather proof micro-switch which is out of view by the seat catch bridge.

Cockpit: -  The output wire (which is probably about 1.5m long) runs out of the underseat storage, up the right hand side of the bike, under the side panel and up by the tank into the cockpit. This terminates in a weatherproof, proprietary type socket into which you can use a number of different, available, conections to the end device - these could be apple 30-pin, mini or micro USB, 90deg USB etc etc. The final cable is only about 30-40cm long, but works great - you can just see the output socket in this picture - to the right of the upper-most handlebar mount - hiding in the fairing. You can also see here, in the middle of the two handlebar mounts / risers - the quick release mount for the sat-nav holder, which I fitted at the same time.

Here is is all equipped with the give S953 Sat Nav mount - which is holding a Garmin Nuvi 'car' Sat Nav.
Also the mini Oxford tank bag which I will use to hold passport, tickets, toll fees, wallet etc on my upcoming alpine-tour - see "planning my first tour" in the rides section.

and no, it doesn't foul the steering in any way! :)

Confirmed as I have just fitted a fused live lead and trips are still correct. Many thanks.

BTW Geekay I'm not sure I would keep those valuable documents in a tank bag - I accept they're easier to get at but I'd worry I hadn't zipped it up / it would blow off etc. Plus you have to take it with you wherever you go and I'd be constantly wondering if I had it with me.

I keep my passport and other docs in inner pockets in my jacket (with a backup credit card and photocopies of other things in a trouser pocket). Takes a little longer to get at but much more secure.

good points - I'm happy to consider -this is my first tour.

My logic for the tank bag was that the items were imediately available and "in front of me" so to speak - if I have to leave the bike, I'd probably lock it in the top-box - but agree id be better with passport etc in my pockets.

I keep passports and tech (phone, camera, etc.) in the tank bag, but nothing important in the see through pouch though. I've never worried that I would leave it unzipped and have those things in there because I want to take the bag off and with me when I get off the bike without having to dig through any other luggage. The first time you have to undress halfway on a rainy day to get at a passport in your inner pocket to get on the Eurotunnel with a queue of cars behind you is the time when you decide to just stick it in the tank bag next time.
