Clunky gear change
« on: June 13, 2013, 01:23:37 »
I'm not sure if this has been mentioned before, the gear change on my 08 k9 650 has become very clunky both changing up and down through all gears, chain and sprockets are less than a year old and done about 5000 miles, I've checked the adjustment is right, I've got a chain oiler on as well so it appears in good nick, it seems to be going worse. Any ideas ? :angry-tappingfoot:

Check the clutch pushrod free play adjustment by the front sprocket and the clutch cable adjustment.
Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. 2012 DL650A outlasted me.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 (K2-L2) DL1000s. Veek=2014+ (L4+) DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 (K4-L1) DL650s. Glee = 2012+ (L2+) DL650s

Is the chain too tight or too loose? People say that if the chain is at the extremes , it causes the gears to be clunky.

My Vee has a real clunky gear change if I change up too early. It is much quieter if I rev it through the gears 4500 to 5500 RPM and its the same coming down the box if I let the bike slow down too much before changing down. However, the advice given above about checking the mechanics is sound.
This doesn't last forever, so do it while you can.

If it's stiff, then the clutch cable adjustment routine (as GW suggests) should sort it, assuming chain isn't too loose or too tight.  Am also assuming the oil is topped up and has been changed as per service schedule.

Thanks for the replies, I'll take greywolf's advice and check those tomorrow, I'd heard that the chain tension and oil level ( oil changed about 3000 miles ago ) had an effect on the gearbox so I checked those before asking the question, didn't want to look too daft  :shy:
