Torque Settings (Round 2)
« on: April 30, 2013, 13:03:29 »
Hi,

So I torqued my crash bars up to 23Nm as suggested with medium strength thread lock but now I've got the torque urge.

How / where can I find the correct torque settings for various bolts.

For instance I did my brakes last week and just did them up hand tight but would really like to tighten them to the manufacturers specifications (or more preferably Greywolfs specifications).

Thanks.  :fix:

Inside the workshop manuals would be your best bet. You'd expect to pay at least £60 for them but best £60 you'll spend on your bike to be honest. You might find it in a haynes manual depending on the age of your bike but there isn't one out for the 2012 yet (although Haynes did tell me there was one planned). They are both really one and the same but the Haynes one will have a bit more tips and less technical info and terminology and it won't refer to stuff like:

"Use your Suzuki Diagnostic System to check if the oil filter is at optimal settings , if not use Suzuki part number 100203242305 to replace the oil filter."

Terms like "Suzuki Super Grease" and "Suzuki Moly Grease" and so on are commonplace in the Suzuki manuals.

Haynes manuals use more generic terms.

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. 2012 DL650A outlasted me.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 (K2-L2) DL1000s. Veek=2014+ (L4+) DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 (K4-L1) DL650s. Glee = 2012+ (L2+) DL650s

Don't trust Haynes' torque settings, see them as a guide and use instinct to know when you're going too far.. I've damaged threads before by blindly following their values..

If your torque wrench isn't calibrated you are wasting your time. The numbers are mostly just decoration on workshop slipper wrenches.

How often should they be calibrated?

The Argos thirty quid type proved utterly pointless, needed calibrating every time they were used even on the same setting. Snap-on wrenches held for over 500 uses, but the scales were out so practically every time you used them on a different bolt you should have them on the meter. Electronic torque cells held for thousands of uses, so calibrated once a year in most uses.
