Pannier / Topbox
« on: April 19, 2013, 12:12:56 »
Hi all,

I hope this is in the right place.

I have had my 58 Plate 1000 for about 6 months now and the top box no longer releases. its a standard Suzuki box. Normally the key opens the lid if you turn it one way and rleases the box as a case if you turn it the other.

When I try to turn the key to release it, nothing happens, then if I turn it further (beyond 45 degrees) the key will go round but it feels like it's not supposed to and still nothing happens.

Any clues as to how to fix this?

Thanks,

Shaun

Sounds like the little cam's come loose from the lock.

You'll need to break in to the box (flat bladed screw driver, butter knife etc) and unscrew the lock cover. After you've collected all the bits that spring out :) you can reassemble and tighten up the little nut that holds the cam on. Mine was fairly munched up (it's only plastic) but it still holds and works.

I did consider making another in brass, but never got round to it.

A common cause for this is having the box locked to the bike, then trying to remove it with the key. There's a little knob inside next to the catch that says 'open'/'closed' - if it's set to close, it stops you turning the key anticlockwise to remove the box. Of course, forcing it was pull the cam off :)

Hi blokes,

Wow that was a fast response!

Very appreciated. I will try and repair the box as pe mje506's suggestions before looking into a replacement.

Thanks again.

This is exactly why I keep the top box off the bike lol

If it sticks , try putting some WD into the lock. I found that loosened it off a LOT on my strom. If it is fully seized you'll need to break it as above or get a locksmith to look at it.

This should serve as a lesson to keep your locks nice and free moving!

Plenty of WD40 and a GOOD wiggle! Then you'll know if it's the cam or not.
