Replacement Topbox and bolts questions
« on: October 25, 2012, 15:46:24 »
Afternoon blokes,

I want a top box that can fir 2 helmets in.  I am more concerned with waterproofness (if that is a word ) and cost than looks.

What top box would you blokes recomend to fit that criteria?  I have a Suzuki standard box on there on the moment, would I have to replace the plate as well?

While I am replacing the topbox I would like to replace the rusting screws holding my panniers on.  Is there a specific pack I can buy?  I know there are bolt backs on ebay but I can't find an eqivalent for screws/alan screws?

Thanks,

Replacing the screws/bolts is really easy! Remove them and take them to your nearest fittings specialist (there are fitting specialists all over the country) and they'll be able to match them in stainless!

Hi, as far as the replacment bolts go, there is 3 different sizes you need for the side-racks,

4  of M8x20  A2 Flanged button heads
1  of M8x25             "
1  of M8x50            "

Drop me a pm, think I'v got a spare set.

I have seen a lot of recommendations for the Givi.  Is there a standard one or variants?  Would that fit on my standard rack?

I have a Givi E52 that does just what you need. I believe it's been replaced by an E55 now.

It's a shame they didn't make the H&K top box just a bit taller then you could have got helmet and a bit of stuff in there too...

Jimbo, agreed. The standard top box only just does not allow two helmets. It is very annoying.

What is the deal with racks are they universal or would I need a new one for the givi?

What is the weight load for a givi?

Givi will not fit straight on to the OEM Suzuki rails.

but...

you can make it fit

I made Givi panniers fit with my OEM rails easily- am planing on doing the same for the topbox when funds and time allow.

you need to remove all the mushroom lugs from the rails, and the locking tab.
(is a bastard as the bolts are made of cheese and the latch bolts are Locktited in- mash them you won't need them again)
replace the latch tabs with the givi ones - one hole will need to be drilled for each but I used one of the holes the suzki bolts went through.
you'll need givi boxes to figure out where the holes need to be drilled for the Givi version of the mushroom lug things.
one of these I think will give you all the parts, can't see if the mushroom lugs are included in the pic, but a givi dealer would know what they're called.

fitted mine last winter. I use the K21's (kappa version of the Givi e21's - just a different stickers on em, mine says Givi on the inside lol)

NB. do not buy V35's they will not fit in any way, shape or form with the OEM racks. Only Standard Monokey fit boxes.

the rails when I first got the things from a bloke in london. (silver- have striped the rust off and painted)

and after fitting Givi mounting hardware and boxes

Oooh. I like that back box and panniers.
So basically I can make it fit. That is all I needed to know. If I screw it up worse case scenario is buy another rack.

Big shout out and thanks to Jake as well. Got my bolts yesterday, no rush on my bike now, happy days

Went to local Suzuki dealer with the rusty bolts problem and was told that only way to get them New from Suzuki is to buy WHOLE brand new frames.
