Valve Clearance Time .
« on: January 12, 2013, 14:02:37 »
I've started them today and got as far as checking the clearances on the front cylinder . They are all within spec and as far as I know they've never been adjusted in 30000 miles . So far I've found it quite easy and straight foreward . I hope the rear cylinder will be the same !

Glad it's all going well! What references are you using?

All finished apart from putting the plastics back on , all the valves were within spec .
The inlet clearances were roughly in the middle of the spec and all the exhaust clearances were between the tight and middle of the spec . Its took me about 6 hours incl repainting the radiator and a oil &filter change .

doing the check is relatively easy, just take your time and follow the manual, but changing shims won't be...

thank god when I checked mine they were all on the loose end of spec and I don't intend to go back in there for another 20k miles at least.

Id have been confident to change the shims if needed , I've done them on many bikes before . Its best to read and make sure you understand everything that's involved before you jump in . Also make sure you have the tools needed for the job incl a micrometer .
