headlight relays
« on: January 11, 2013, 15:47:30 »
OK I know I've gone through this before.
I put diodes on my relay as went you flash or go to main/dipped the indicators flash on.
I know most people say you get use to it (not me)
but reading a link graywolf put up http://www.autoshop101.com/forms/hweb2.pdf
it might not burn out you bike brains but its a bit of a chance .

I tried diodes on my relays back before I went to HIDs and they did eliminate the flash. I had LEDs in the indicators instead of the stock incandescents and they would flash too. Jim Davis at Eastern Beaver was aware of the situation and said he chose not to include diode protection because he said it can shorten the life of the relays. I took the diodes out as I didn't want to create a possible problem down the line to cure a condition I didn't really see as a problem. The spike can be a problem in electronics with more delicate parts but not one problem has been reported with the relay kits. There don't seem to be any delicate electronics in the turn signal system.

OK not to sure I am reading this right.

Are you saying that on your bikes, when you operate the dip switch or headlight flasher switch the indicator lights flash as well?

Tried this on my bike and it doesn't happen and I can't see why it would.

Or is this the result of a after market item being fitted?  Or am I reading this wrong.

It only happens to the green LEDs on the dash when headlight relays are added. The collapsing field on the relay windings when one is shut off induces a small current in the wiring, enough to flash the LEDs. Since I had LEDs in the turn signal lights, they would also flash.
