Lights too high on DL650 with lowering kit
« on: December 10, 2012, 14:38:06 »
I've a dealer fitted lowering kit on my DL650 as I'm only a measly 5'7" and couldn't reach the floor without wooden blocks taped to my boots.

My problem is the lights, the dealer has adjusted them to the end stop the low beam is fine for me but I suspect its causing issues for some oncoming drivers (they at least can see me!) however switch to high beam and I get a nice view of the road immediately in front of me and a nice view of the trees and bushes but a dark band across the bit of road I really want to look at.

Anyone else had this same problem and have solved it or can offer a solution.

One option is to fit spotlights onto the High Beam side to act as a filler but this is going to pull a huge amount of power and I've already got quite a few extras on board.

 :ty: in advance

Have you also dropped the forks through their clamps?

I wouldn't know where to even start, I'm one of those people that you hide the toolkit from as I'm hopeless at mechanics so I left everything to the dealer.

Each fork is held in place with 2 clamps. These clamps can be loosened off to allow the forks to be up to about 20mm lower. At the moment each fork tube sits flush with the clamp by the ignition, when you have made the adjustment each fork will poke up by up to 20mm. As you don't have the confidence ask the garage to drop the forks by 10mm each, then if that isn;t low enough try 15mm and finally 20mm. It is literally a 2 minute job.

Lowered mine by 25mm at rear and 15mm at front then went round to see a mate who just happens to do bike MOTs, and checked them them using his headlamp testing kit, they were high but we managed to adjust them to the correct setting with no trouble.

Thanks for all the help blokes.

I've popped back to the dealer and he's said that he didn't lower the front so were going to give it a go after Christmas and see if that fixes the problem. Only able to be lowered by a max of 7mm because of the ABS so were going to go for 5mm and fingers crossed that will be fixed.  Just leaves an issue with the alarm system not flashing all the indicators and the bike will be 100% tiptop :)

Based on you avatar, you have a Glee. There is no ABS junction conflict with a fork brace like there is on the Wee. Even with a brace, you can safely do 21mm.

Can anyone tell me what is the most I can lower my front end.
I have a wee with abs ,can it be done without taking the fairing  panels off?

ABS matters with a Wee lowering clearance and a fork brace. If you do not have a fork brace, ~21mm, with a Superbrace, ~7mm, with other fork braces, ~10mm. A fork brace is a very good idea though. Fork tubes can be raised one side at a time easily without removing any plastics.

is it possible to not remove the wheel and raise both at once?

You don't remove the wheel. Loosen the one bolt on the top triple clamp and the two bolts on the lower triple clamps on one side at a time so the other side will hold the bike up and keep it from sliding down the tubes. Adjust the loose side to the point you want and tighten the bolts. Then loosen, adjust and tighten the other side. I think you are forgetting the tubes can move separately. That, in fact, is a big reason why a fork brace is a good idea. Without one, the only thing holding the lower legs in alignment is the axle.

after lowering my wee at rear found steering was affected it wanted to go wide on corners.
dropped forks one at a time as explained, very easy but limited on my ABS model not by fork brace but by handlebars max about 15mm.
Sharpened up handling a lot!
now have longest 'dog bones' available 27" inside leg still a stretch, so seat also lowered and moved forward and down.
If that doesn't work it's a trike!!!!
