It never rains, but
« on: August 26, 2012, 11:42:00 »
It pours.

As well as the cross threaded mounting bolt on my rear caliper, I now have an FI warning flashing every few seconds, but not all of the time.  It tends to come on over 40mph and goes off at lower speeds.  I've checked the manual and it could be any number of things.  Does anybody in my vicinity have the Suzuki code reader or an idea as to the most likely cause?

So that jumper mentioned is just a single wire connected to the two wired connectors on the FI plug?  Can you get a key cut by a normal Simpsons type or are they chipped and expensive?

Yup, a straightened paperclip stuffed into the correct holes in that plug will get you into dealer mode, and the code can be matched to find the 'error'.

Keys up to 2011 are all simple stuff, no chips or electronics.

Also - check it is an FI error, and not that your oil level is just on the threshold!

I think it may have been down to low coolant. I have a leak that I can't find and the level was very low. Since topping it up the fault has not reappeared.

Good stuff. Might be worth doing on oil change sooner than normal - make sure the little oil that was left didn't pick up too much crap.

edit: Running at high speed can use some oil on some bikes. I'm not sure if it gets sucked into the airbox, or just burnt by the engine, but mine does it. :)

Yep. Used a fair bit of oil last winter riding motorway 60 miles a day. Oil use has slowed now I'm back working more local and using the local roads. Havent ever needed to top up the c.o.o.lant. And my baby is 5 years old now... Suppose that means I need to change it a year ago then...

Just done a coolant change on mine (as part of its 14.5k service, doing slightly late at 16k). Just remember to rock the bike, squeeze the large coolant hose a lot, and take a few short test rides... topping up the radiator and mini coolant tank (underneath the fuel tank) each time you do.
It's really awkward having to take the fuel tank up so many times in rapid succession, but it's made a difference to mine.
