Brake Discs!
« on: April 27, 2014, 08:41:20 »
I recently replaced my rear disc on my DL1000 with a wavy one which cost me £30 from ebay :)

My question is; since my front brakes have 2 discs would it be safe for me to just buy two more discs at the same price as opposed to paying over the odds for the standard front end market type?

The Vee just recently passed her MOT and the tester remarked that it was a decent disc on the rear for the price I paid!

Any comment welcome. :ty:

I'm careful with rear disks, I paid a bit more than £30 recently because I read some review of the specific type of cheap disk on eBay that I was looking at cracking after a short period of time. I ended up buying a JT Braking disk, a brand I trust for sprockets.

Depending on who makes the front disks they might be right and left sided. I have EBC front disks, not the cheapest, but they are well made and these disks' particular design mean they have less bobbins. These EBC disks are also either sided. They've also stayed neat, the bobbins aren't showing any rust, with cheap disks you often see rust very soon on the front floating disks (you don't have this issue on fixed rear disks.) Even though the EBC disks are great I might look to see if JT do disks for the Wee when I buy next, just to save a few pounds. That said, sometimes cheap is false economy and I think when it comes to brake disks this is often true.

I put a cheap Arashi brake disk on the DR-Z, so far so good and they are getting good reviews on the DR-Z forum and some other forums I did searches on. Perhaps they make disks for the Strom?

I put these (http://www.blackshadow-uk.co.uk/Suzuki.html) discs on the front at 30k miles, the bike has now done over 65k miles and the discs have been absolutely fine. I never replaced the rear disc.

Thanks for the reply. Still don't understand left or right disc differences surely both are the same.

I could be wrong but I doubt the rear and the front are the same diameter or that the holes for mounting them are in the same place. Fronts are usually bigger as that's where the stopping power needs to be.

A 320 front disc takes up twice the area of a 220 rear disc, you need 2 front discs, so that is 4 times the material. Add on the extra machining and that the fronts are floating and the rears not and you can easily see where the extra cost comes from.

Interesting disc related fact, Hondas NC700 has a single front disc, the rear disc is machined from the piece they cut out of the middle of the front disc.

I can highly recommend armstrong waveys, I have one on the front of my CB500 and its easily as good as OEM, lighter also.
When I need to replace my Vee discs I will replace them with armstrong. don't go for their pads though, they are shite. :-x . the best pads to go with armstrong discs IMO are OEM or Brembo.

The two front discs are identical, and very different from the rear.
Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. 2012 DL650A outlasted me.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 (K2-L2) DL1000s. Veek=2014+ (L4+) DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 (K4-L1) DL650s. Glee = 2012+ (L2+) DL650s

Mad Phil also swears by Blackshadow disks, has them on his Busa and says he's never had better, longer lasting disks before. The Busa is a (very fast) bus compared to the Wee, that has to count for something? :)
