V-strom Service
« on: April 07, 2013, 17:22:48 »
Hi,

I'm coming up to my first ever V-Strom service, in fact my first ever bike service... I really am trying to learn as much as possible and hopefully next year I'll be doing my own service.

But can I ask, when it comes to plugs and filters, is there any requirement to go for anything special? Or could I get something like this:

I've used hi-flo filters on other bikes and they've been fine.
Now on a Super Tenere having put 64k miles on a 2011 DL650

Yeah, that's fine, I also use hiflo oil filters.. NGK plugs are original equipment on most bikes anyway.

Search out the bits though, you might be able to get them cheaper individually.

Sitting comfortably.... The recommended oil is an SAE 10W/40 multigrade of API spec. either SF/SG or SH/SJ. These will probably only be found in the motorcycle section in places like Halfords as most car oils although showing 10W40 will be of different API specs. A semi-synthetic is fine and there's no benefit in spending extra on a full-synthetic. The general view is to buy a recognised brand such as Castrol, Silkolene, Shell, Mobil, Motul, Morris etc. Any good brand of the right spec. will do just fine. You'll pay premium prices at bike dealers and should be able to get a better deal off the internet (Ebay?). Some companies will do you a complete service pack, as you've already seen at very good prices.
