No.

As with GW, this is not normal.  I would start by replacing te bulb, I have seen it quite a lot where the filament breaks but then sticks to the other filatment, so the light works but does not always operate as it should.

With mine, when I switch to high beam I lose much/all of the low beam.  However when I press the "pass" switch they both stay lit.  I assume that is correct?

Yup, that's normal Strommer. High beam switches off the dips, but the 'pass' switch leaves both on.

Thought so, now I've found their loose connection I'll get the Rigid Duallys back on the bike for winter and switched from the high beam for the country lanes.

Was also posted at VSRI. The OP had the connector to the bulb on wrong.

I already answered the post at VSRI. I didn't think a more complete answer would help anybody here. I'm not bad. I'm just drawn that way.

At least on a Strom you can get at the lights to change the bulbs relatively easily, my previous Ducati Multistrada phlllaaah (washes mouth out ) defeated both the MOT man at Streetbike in Birmingham (big plug ) who had some great 10" longhandled pliers and me to change the pilot light bulb which apparently even though the heads are on when the engine is running you have to have to pass the MOT. Took me an hour and a half to get at the f'er, and half the bike in bits, to find either Ducati or the previous owner had glued the f'ing bulb holder into the headlight housing.
There is a big list of reasons why I changed it which I won't bore the assembled populous with just now  ###
