Speedo sensor location?
« on: July 11, 2012, 08:31:29 »
I changed my Chain & Sprockets on my 08 Vee last night and this morning have noticed that my speedometer is 15 miles lower than it should be ( 45 in a 30 )!

Can anyone point me in the direction of where I should be making adjustments to get this back on track please?

adjustments... hmmm...
are you using a different ratio now? If yes, a 'speedo healer' will help.
If no, have you fixed the speed sensor correctly? It's positioned on the sprocket cover.

Berndi,

I don't think I have fitted it correctly, to tell the truth, I stood behind my mate while he did all the manual work holding the coffee :)

I didn't notice if he had done anything wrong, but there were no bits left over so it must be right

Although, I did notice that he did tighten the sensor fitting with an extra bit of leverage, normally I would fit it hand tight since it doesn't have any stresses put on it that may make it go loose.

BTW: The Sun is out now :violence-uzi:

remove the speedsensor again and clean it. And remove the sprocket cover and clean the counter piece (in english...?), too.
If it still doesn't work after this, perhaps the sensor or the sensor wire is broken or the wire plug ( under the left fairing) is dirty/wet.
(Hope, you understand what I mean... :shy: )

The speedo sensor is on the end of the front sprocket countershaft. It is a Hall Effect magnetic sensor with some poles running past a magnetic pickup. It sounds like one of the poles may have broken off.

While removing the Front sprocket I inadvertently snapped them off with a HAMMER and BIG SCREWDRIVER lol  lol   #

Now I understand your concern over whether the forks have to come off to install gaiters. I have notified Interpol and they are coming to confiscate your tools.

Enjoyed reading this thread. Made me think though, my wee indicates 70mph when my gps (which agrees with the car) shows 60. I guess I'll have to take the sprocket cover off and have a look at the speed sensor jobby. I always assumed they lived on the front wheel though. Shows how much I've been paying attention.
If at first you don't succeed, try a bigger hammer.

The speedo sensor on the Wee is on the front axle. The speedo is about 8% optimistic when it is functioning as designed.

OK. Now feel even more stupid. Next time will look before I post and in the mean time, will attempt to calculate 8% as I go while accepting, there's nothing I can do about it.

Cheers greywolf.

Just to cover all bases, the sensor on the Glee is set up like the Vee, on the countershaft. I'm told that putting a 16T countershaft sprocket on the Glee will make the speedo accurate. Too bad I tried a 16T on the old Wee and didn't like it.
