TAx Disc Lost or Nicked
« on: April 04, 2012, 16:27:08 »
I was over near Dover yesterday with the Strom, when I went to clean the bike, I noticed most of the tax disc holder and tax disc had gone.

It was the circular type with a rubber seal that holds the glass in place.

Recommendations for a new type would be appreciated.

£7 to the DVLA for a replacement, you have to take it to your DVLA Local office (Brighton for me), don't know what will happen when the planned closures go ahead?

I hate the DVLA phone call system, takes about a week to speak to a human.

I have a hexagon shaped one that has allen screws to hold the cover in place. It let in a bit of water, but it's solid and I think it's more difficult to get the disc out if someone wanted to steal it. Otherwise one of those tube type ones might be the way to go.

My Viz top tip is laminate the paper disc, whatever holder it's going into.

My Tax disc vanished one day, I replaced the holder with bolted ring type this has stayed in place  and stayed dry.  Last one was nicked, because some time later I had a phone call from my insurance company to say that my bike had been involved in an accident, I informed them my bike was happy and undamaged and that I believed my tax disc had been stolen. :angry-tappingfoot:

Tube thingy ordered http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/METAL-TAX-DISC-TUBE-HOLDER-SILVER-MOTORCYCLE-BIKE-MOTORBIKE-SCOOTER-MOPED-QUAD-/320857368616?pt=UK_Motorcycle_Parts&hash=item4ab496e828 , I think I'll put a smear of clear mastic on the inside of the end cap, should keep it safe till next year and renewal time.

You won't need to. They have an Allen key screw thing to keep the end on.
These tax disc holders are really good. It is quick and easy to undo the Allen screw and replace  the tax disk.
And your tax disc will be very safe too

Whatever tax disc holder you do use I would suggest that you glue the paper into it that way it ain't coming out at all.

I camouflage my tax disk with mud and road muck. Any thief willing to put their hands in that still wouldn't be able to see the thing haha

Re communication with DVLA Swansea: I had to call them the other day and got through to a real person fairly quickly. The story.
On 19th March I collected my brand new GSR 750 and by 1800 I was in hospital (See Oh Bugger 2)
A few days later when I got home I found the new log book on the mat.
It showed date first registered was 23rd March.
I went to see the dealer and we looked at the paperwork which showed they had put the wrong date on their application to register my bike. ( I signed this document but did not read all the details - who does-)
Fearing Insurance company would declare the bike illegal at time of accident I phoned DVLA and asked their advice. They told me to hand log book to the dealer and get dealer to write to DVLA and explain what happened , enclosing the log book, and DVLA will issue corrected document.
As for the tax disc I was only able to find half of it in the wreckage. DVLA say send what I have to them and they will refund whatever I am owed.
So there are some good folk at DVLA. ( time will tell if the DVLA machine works as indicated)
Dave

Just carry the original disc on you in your wallet. I've been stopped many times and once I explain that tax discs are regularly stolen from bikes the old bill are fine. my tax was nicked on several occasions when I was a courier .
