Title: 1050XT Stock look sound
Post by: Dazzarati on May 04, 2021, 12:30:14
Hi folks, here's my dilemma, I like the look of the stock exhaust but wish it made a nicer noise. Is there a slip on that looks anything like the stock one or is there a way of changing the stock one to a deeper  beefier tone.
Cheers

Really? I doubt you'll find an aftermarket version that looks that bulky as that's why many people tend to want to get rid of it.

Changing the sound of the stock breadbin would need surgery to the internals so what's your level of metalwork skills & access to tools?

The Akrapovic exhaust can is large almost like the oe, that's the only one I know but it's also hugely expensive. I have run a remus this last few years but removed it in March for the mot, I've not changed it back as I like how quiet the bike is now and it seems to run a wee bit better or feels like it.

That is a pretty close match, and £750 is the cheapest I see from a quick look.

I'm wondering if you should trust a company with such a poor grasp of basic arithmetic though:

Hi folks thank you for your reply. I like the look of the Akrapovic can the most out of all the ones I have seen online but like already said I don't like the price tag.

In terms of my metal work skills what I lack in finesse I make up with enthusiasm. I'm happy to have a go and fortunate to have a mate who will be able to weld it back together.  Has anyone done this before? What are we talking about making a straight through pipe?  I would be curious to know how it went and what sort of results were achieved. I don't just want a louder noise although that would be nice.

The Ackro adds a nicer running note to the bike and you get the nice rumble and pop that's missing from the standard, plus I think it looks nicer than stock. On the plus side, no remapping is needed... is the Ackro worth the money? NO, the performance gains are minimal and you will not notice them. It's a huge amount of money for vanity.

Frankly, there is little point in swapping out from stock. Other pipes that get mentioned a lot (e.g. black wid, delv, etc) are a recipe for ruining the running of the 1050XT. Besides, in a world where everyone is living closer and closer to each other the louder pipes are nothing but obnoxious and they "don't save lives".

I like the look of a stockier can, but with a better note. I chose to use Leo Vince. Not as bulky as the original, but bigger than most others. I agree, I am not a fan of the smaller cans.

I'm thinking a Mivv Speed edge would look really good on the 1050 and 650, there very well made and half the cost of an Ackro

These seem well made and sound good on the KTM

If you like Arrow, then investigate Giannelli (ebay) which are made by Arrow and just as good, but cheaper.  Also note that any exhaust from the DL1000 2014 onwards fit as well, so you have more choice than you realise.  Any DL1050 after market exhaust will be Euro V with fixed baffles and minimal change in output.  The DL1000 Euro III (removable baffle) will make better noise; Euro 1V have welded baffles that need to be snapped (welds) to remove.

I have a Euro III Yoshimura that is excellent and as they work hand in hand with Suzuki are the best match.

I use the Leo Vince. It's got the larger size which I think suits the bike, it sounds better, but not much louder and it's well finished. URL --> https://leovince.co.uk/product-category/find-a-product/Suzuki/v-strom-1050-abs-xt/

A large amount of silencing is done by the cataclysmic inverter these days, how about installing a de-cat pipe and keeping the stock can ? If a de-cat pipe is not available then gutting the cat out of the stock system could work ? Just a thought, but I did this on my Aprilia Caponord 1200 and it sounded superb with the cat out giving it a really deep bellow when the exhaust valve opened. Ran superb too and it stopped cooking my right foot in traffic too which was a bonus.

If you gut the stocker you may need another to get through the MOT without an advisory. Better to keep the original and fit an aftermarket - that's what  did but I did not like the original look. Each to their own.

I’ve just taken delivery of a MIVV Speed Edge to fit on my 1050XT.

When I get chance to put it on, I’ll take some photos.👍

With regards to the original post:  As for me I would only change the end can if it reduced weight.
I would want to know what the OE weighs and what alternatives weighs less without an increase in decibels.
That said, having begun my motorcycle ogling in the early sixties my most desired shape and sound in BSA Goldie with tweeter. I don't like these lightly flattened kitchen waste bins that seem to be the current style.

Fitted this today……. 2.5kgs lighter than stock. Only a little louder (suits me), but a little throatier.👍
