Was reading some AL4+AL8 blurb and stumbled on this passage.

"The open-type rectifier disconnects the magneto when it is not
generating electricity to reduce mechanical losses, resulting in stronger
torque at low and mid-range engine speeds".

Anyone know how this works - electrics aren't my thing. ?

I get the basic principle of when off there less magnetic resistance on the mag/flywheel but when is this cutting in and out?

Just curious like t understand to see if could be retro-butchered to an 04SV?

I'm no electrics guru but dabble quite alot fixing charging systems on bikes so I'd like to see how this concept works..? Because the only way to increase power in that area is to lighten the fly wheel.

That doesn’t ring true to me,as a general rule the fixed stator windings and the surrounding magnets are producing constantly and the amount of juice they produce is variable with engine revolutions.The rectifier changes the 3 phase A/C to D.C.and then when the battery is up to the preset voltage built into the regulator converts what is not required into heat,which is dissipated out through the fins on the rec/regulator.I did say in general because there are some very clever rec/regs about now that do this differently,but I do not know how they work,so cannot comment.I reckon if you disconnected the magneto whilst the engine was running it would self destruct due to uncontrolled voltage building up in the windings.That is why if the rec/reg.goes down it sometimes takes the stator with it.

An alternator that isn't connected to anything has very little resistance to turning so the no load part I can understand. However, no load means nothing making any demands at all I.e. no ignition, lights or charging going on. I did install a switch on my hillclimber many years back to cut off the charging to free up a few extra ponies when on the actual run & operate on a total loss basis until the end. Not practical for road use though.

Kwackboy - I put the lighter 05SV1K magneto into my 04SV1K. Spins up a helluva lot faster for sure with a touch more power on the dyno8utt :)

The blurb 'suggests' this operates and mid-low rpm ???
