Hi everyone .
I'm beginning suspect that my fuel pump maybe on its last legs (will conduct tests soon)but before I go ahead with this work has anyone ever upgraded there fuel pumps to anything better than OEM ? if so any recommendations ?

The Pump is cheap and I used an after market one, it's the high pressure fuel filter that may cost you.

I'd think it was unlikely that the pump was failing, more likely a fuel restriction?

Indeed , this is what I'm looking at first . I will do tests to determine what's what but I may replace the pump as it's now 10 years old .
I've been getting random stalling and coughing at low revs but the problem seems to appear only when I've not ridden the bike for some time but yet dissappears after a couple of tanks of fuel so I'm mainly going to look at the filter .
There are a few sellers on eBay selling new pumps with filters but unsure about pattern filters?

That sounds like a TPS problem. A fuel pump problem manifests as an inability to run higher revs and speeds. Even a low fuel pump output can handle low speeds and idling.

Greywolf, that's the first thing I checked, all tests are within spec . The curveball in this problem is that it only happens if the bike has not been used in a while.
Once the tank is empty and then refilled the problem goes away . :shrug: I've even ridden with the fuel cap off just in case the breather was blocked .

The TPS cannot be accurately tested. All the book test does is to check whether the voltage is within the proper range. The voltage can be totally wrong for the throttle position and still be in range. Also, the voltage will vary due to heat on a bad TPS. A bad TPS can be within range, even accurate, yet go to inaccurate when hot. Your symptoms are classic. Replace the TPS.

The voltage test going into the tps reads correct But the other test you can do is an ohms test , this can be done on or off the bike. You can test the ohms range by either turning the throttle on the bike or with your fingers if it's off the bike . I've done tests with the TPS on the bike hot and cold, both tests are within range .

Was I not clear? The value can be in range and still be wrong. If you want to fool around with other stuff that doesn't lead to the symptoms you describe, it's your time and money.

Greywolf , by no means am I disagreeing with you , I'm nearly stating what tests I've done for which suggest my TPS is good. This doesn't mean I'm not going to change it..! and yes you are correct , it is my money .!

Thought I'd update as I've now done a fuel pump flow test and the result is 500ml after 30seconds, The manual states 1200ml . Time to strip the pump to see what's up ?
Unfortunately I don't have equipment to do a pressure test .

Pressure is rarely a problem unless a seal has deteriorated. The usual problem is a clogged high pressure filter. Bypassing the internal filter and changing to an external one is a popular and less expensive option. http://www.vstrom.info/Smf/index.php/topic,6105.0.html

Yes agreed , lucky I bought a high pressure filter as well as the TPS. :icon_wink:.
The TPS is fitted regardless if the old one is faulty or not but I'm having a bit of trouble dismantling the pump assembly , after removing all the easy stuff it does not want to split from the metal base, It feels a bit delicate to really tug on it ..!
As for the filter mod , I think I will leave that as a last resort because the filter is rather an expensive item but will do the mod if need be .

Hi again, been a while due to my work commitments but here is an update on this issue regarding possible fuel pump and TPS issues. After the flow test results of 500ml I decided to buy an OEM high pressure sieve and upon advice a TPS because the issue (in my opinion) had pointed towards either however, I thought why not replace a 10 year old fuel pump while I’m in there. After waiting a while I finally received a complete kit that consists of everything you need for £20 from eBay.

So , time to remove the old pump and sieve to see what was up , this is what I’d found.

Although the sieve was clogged I didn’t think it was really as bad as others I’d seen but as said earlier it’s been in there 10 years along with maybe a tired pump . After dismantling the complete assembly I cleaned and reassembled with the new pump and an OEM sieve, I know the kit comes with a new sieve but I’d bought an OEM one(£36 !!) so decided to use that instead.
With all this done I repeated a flow test 3 times and the results were 1000ml per 30secs, this is still below Suzuki’s spec but it’s now double what it was so I’m happy with that for now and Once the tank was fitted I started my Vee up and all is well with what feels like a more responsive throttle so once I’m able a test drive is due.
Coming back to the TPS , I think I will fit it at a later date even if the issue is fixed because as greywolf said the symptoms I'd had points towards a TPS issue but as I’d found an issue with the pump it was easier to change it first . Fingers crossed .!!

The biggest culprit in the Pump assembly is the High Pressure Filter which can't be cleaned, although it's only a mere £100 to replace :dl_soapbox:

Is that the price for a 650 filter ? . My pump appears different to the one you was working on, the main filter in my pump was around £250 +vat ..!! . Even the trade price was to silly money also .
Not sure if you noticed Andy but the Kemso pump seems rather loud , I could even hear it noticably over the sound of my akrapovic exhausts .. :shock:

It was a K7 650 I was working on, I think the whole assembly was c£250 but the High Pressure Filter was c£100. My pump wasn't noisy.
