This is Custard  a K2 Suzuki V-Strom DL1000 that I have picked up, it needs some TLC to get her roadworthy again.
The first task was to take the first four layers of grime off so I can see what's what. Lots of black parts returning to silver.

One Exhaust Stud has sheared and the other feels like it will. Any magical tips to get them out? The one already sheared has enough thread to grab with a pair of Mole Grips.

Next is draining the old fuel and fitting a new battery.

Plenty of heat usually does the trick - and as the engine finish is already pretty scabby, you won't do that any harm either....
:fix:
Iggy
-
I hear good things about Plus-gas.
-
I've been applying Plusgas since last night, fingers crossed.
-
It's in pretty good condition.
The previous owner lost enthusiasm with the bike when his head was turned for another (we all know how that goes) <!-- s:) -->:)<!-- s:) -->
The combination of a few faults meant it was left unused for an extended period. I'm encouraged at how well she is cleaning up. I have removed the sheared studs, reassembled the exhaust (replacing one clamp) and replaced a blown sidelight (actually I replaced both while I was in there).
I even took her for a ride up the driveway <!-- s:auto-dirtbike: -->:auto-dirtbike:<!-- s:auto-dirtbike: -->
I've optimistically booked her in for an MOT tomorrow, once she is through that I will start stripping her. The Clutch Basket will be on its way to John Sharealike on Monday <!-- s:fix: -->:fix:<!-- s:fix: -->
-
One of the sheared studs came out with heat and Plusgas, the other had to be drilled (although that went well, 7mm drill and then cleaned the thread with an 8mm tap) :)
Just before taking her for an MOT I realised that there was no dip beam :GRR: went straight to the connector behind the Radiator and sure enough, lots of corroded terminals. An hour of cleaning later and 'let there be light' :)
She went in for MOT this morning and passed without any advisories. :lala:
However...
I took her for a blast when I got home and noticed the dip beam flick on and off a couple of times. She is going on the bench now for a strip down. Once I have all the Plastics and Tank off I will look at the look at the loom.
Jobs to do;
Strip
expose, clean and seal all wiring connections
Plugs, Oil, Filters
Check Valve Clearances (Diver is going to be my lovely assistant on Sunday)
Chain & Sprockets
Remove Clutch Basket and send to John Sharealike
Clean & paint Engine & Water Pump housing
Check/replace Water Pump Seals
Clean/Paint Radiators
Clean/Paint any corrosion
I have to remember that this is a K2 with 40k on the clock and don't want to spend a fortune on her but most of these jobs just require time rather than dosh.
-
Seeing as "strip" and "expose" are the first two jobs, then please don't photograph them.
However, keep the reports going on the rest of the work. :)
-
Assistant :angry-tappingfoot:
-
Yes plenty pics make it more interesting , ffs give Diver a better title lol
-
No, 'Lovely Assistant'.
Truth be told, Diver will be showing me how to check Valve Clearances <!-- s:) -->:)<!-- s:) -->
-
OK, I had an intermittent dip beam problem, I opened up the usual suspects and cleaned and sealed.
The fault was in the right hand connector on this picture
(https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5566/14683749835_df195ca6e9.jpg)
There was one terminal that was too far gone so I cut the wire out of the connector, soldered and heat shrunk.

Then it was time to remove the Clutch Basket ready to send to John Sharealike

That's Diver dressed as my lovely assistant :)
Or it could be my daughter :)

:text-datsphatyo:

Nice man boobs Diver :)
-
no lifting my skirt Andy!

What happens in the Man Cave stays in the Man Cave :)

I had a very therapeutic evening yesterday, cleaning anything that stood still and then removing bolts, greasing (where appropriate) and replacing.
I also painted the frame.
Today, more cleaning and painting.

Looking good Rat :thumb: should look quite tidy when finished.
-
You don't mess about do you. Valves should be fun, more pics of that please.
-
I wasn't looking forward to tackling the quality paint finish that we have come to expect from Suzuki :GRR:
Once I started though, it became a mission.
Lots (and lots) of prep.
Both the Clutch Cover and Water Pump Housing with two coats of Etch Primer

Looking good mate.
If you need cheap "sky hooks" and are near to any building sites...armored cable outer shielding is great. I rob it from skips, luckily we've just had a 11kV main replaced at work and have a few years worth :)
-
Nice to see the resurrection in progress... Slight jealousy on your workshop size from here!
-
My lovely assistant came round today (she had more facial hair than I remembered)
We set about checking Valve clearances and it looks like I need to go shopping for Shims (one cylinder is out of spec. on both inlet and outlet).

After bleeding all the brakes we set about the front Sprocket Cover and cleaning the Clutch Cylinder etc. in readiness for the Clutch returning from Sharealike next week :)

no worries mate.
As I said I enjoy working on bikes, and thanks for breakfast and the decals. :lala:
Jen almost wet herself when she saw the close-up of me. lol
-
I finished the day with a bit of painting.
Genuine Halfords Silver Wheel Paint Suzuki Engine Paint :) (Clear coat to go on tomorrow).

-
I see the Vee has the cams running on gears instead of the chain driving the cams like on the 650. That makes changing shims a lot easier on the Vee than on the Wee then.
-
Clear coat applied to the Clutch Cover & Water Pump housing.
Things will slow down a little now as John Sharealike has had the audacity to take a holiday :)
-
Given John Sharealike's outrageous decision to take a holiday this year :) I am twiddling my thumbs a bit.
So..
Every connector in the loom opened, cleaned and sealed.
Exhausts off for a clean and paint..

Yes, easy street. Even easier if you mark the cogs before you pop them off. I know they have marks that you line up with this and that and have punch marks or whatever, but, seriously, mark them up. :thumb:
-
I shall mark them up :thumb:
-
So just to recap, to make sure I've got this right, you need to make your mark before you pop your cogs? There you go, the whole meaning of life encapsulated in a Vstrom engine stripdown. Perfect.
-
Nice one Simon. It all makes perfect sense now! lol
-
Treasure :)
I decided to replace the Clutch & Water Pump cover fasteners for Stainless.
-
Is that a bolt kit or just a load of bolts bought at the right size?
I'd like to replace all the ones I take off the Glee in the coming years as I remove and replace them under normal maintenance.
-
It's just bolts of the right size, I tend to buy at least 10 at a time of any given size. :)
-
For anyone interested, I used Stainless Socket Cap Bolts..
Water Pump
M6 x 30 (2 of)
M6 x 65 (3 of)
M8 x 10 (1 of)
M8 Copper Washer (1 of)
Clutch Cover
M6 x 30 (9 of)
M6 x 75 (2 of)
-
I'm interested....my Clutch basket and waterpump covers are off and I too await John Sharealike's kind attention to the clutch basket....might as well order up some bling while I wait....
I still need to clean off the gasket faces. Just as well its forecast sunny tonight (bike work carried out in driveway).
-
My Clutch Basket is due back tomorrow, just as I leave for a weekend of nights in London :bawl:
-
Arrived as promised (thanks John).

-
I'm just back after some grueling night shifts in London :bawl:
I'm waiting for my lovely assistant to get back tomorrow (Daughter not Diver) :) and then I'm determined to get Custard back together.
Because I couldn't help but get my hands dirty this evening I did the worthwhile tasks of fitting some new Plugs.

. Oooh shiny stuff
-
I am the tiredest bloke in the world. I drove to London yesterday afternoon, worked until 4am then drove home again.
Somehow I found the energy to crack on with the reassembly. I did okay, got everything back on, Oil and Coolant in and I started her :)
Unfortunately I have an oil leak, some knob (me) hasn't put one of the Rocker covers on properly :violence-smack:
Tank off in the morning and hopefully all will be well.
-
Yeah we only did them hand tight.
-
I've had them off again since your visit Nathan, so I can't even blame you :shy:

-
looking good
-
After re-seating the Rocker Cover I still had a slight oil leak, on closer examination it was making its way past the threads on one of the bolts
I have ordered a Helicoil kit but won't have time to make the repair until next week ###
For anyone interested, the Rocker bolts are M7.
-
wOw, you're doing a fantastic job on that custard DL thou, makes great reading, well done yourself, dedication alright. Have you thought about changing both front headlamp bulbs to the likes of Osram brighter/whiter bulbs.....?
And whilst your at it, you could order a two tooth more rear sprocket (Renthal) for more oomph, it does make a better improved/difference, trust me, mines been replaced for nearly a year now and wouldn't go back to the standard sprocket...........ever.
Have fun.
Pete
-
I've never felt the need to enhance the Strom lights, they are the best from any bike I have ever owned :)
-
That Halfords Silver Wheel paint isn't a perfect match but I think it looks okay..
c](https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5581/14927173955_1b800774e7.jpg)
Because the Tank has to come off to repair the thread in the head this is as far as I can go until next week :GRR:
Rear plastics, Sump Cover and Rear Carrier back on.
-
Mr. Rat, those cam cover bolts all appear to be missing a rubber gasket, that's probably why it's leaking.
Number 25 in the diagram:
http://www.suzukipartshouse.com/oempart ... inder-head (http://www.suzukipartshouse.com/oemparts/a/suz/508afb8bf870023530722f25/front-cylinder-head)
ps. I was hoping for another glimpse of your more attractive helper :GRR:
-
If only :)
The washers are there Juv, I had wound the bolts back in so I didn't lose them.
-
Too bad, that'd be a real easy fix :(
-
Aside from forthcoming vendetta's involving offspring, have you tried ptfe tape on the threads? It works.
-
I think the one in question has had a Helicoil before, remnants of it were attached to the bolt when it came out.
-
Are you confident of the thread being m7? If it is tapped for a helicoil then it will be oversized. Or did you measure the screw?
-
I think the one in question has had a Helicoil before, remnants of it were attached to the bolt when it came out.
B*gger. Remnants.
-
Are you confident of the thread being m7?
OE Screws M7. When I put the new Helicoil in it will still be M7 :)
-
Tap it out to an M8?
-
Only asked as m7 is a curious size!
The bike's looking very nice! I'm enjoying this thread. :)
-
M7 is weird but actually the bolts appear on many of Suzuki's bikes (GS500 DRZ400 GSXR750 GSF1200).
I'll Helicoil it Jacko as I want to use the OE bolts and even though they are well hidden an odd one would drive my OCD nuts :)
-
....m7 is a curious size...I'm enjoying this thread. :)
I see what you did there, very good! :)
-
Don't helicoil if you can avoid it - use a "timesert" much better as it's a solid.
-
I have used both and have always had excellent (permanent) results with each.
-
The lip to stop the insert screwing into the hole on the timesert would concern me, what if you needed a flush mating between components?
-
Not guilty on the previous helicoil! May have been the main dealer the previous owner used that we were discussing when you were here... But Custard is coming up lovely... Maybe time to rename her creme anglais as being a lot posher than custard?
-
The lip to stop the insert screwing into the hole on the timesert would concern me, what if you needed a flush mating between components?
Timeserts have spotfacing cutter in the kit for making a recess for the lip to sit in. At least the kits I've seen have one in.
-
That would be a great solution.
-
The tasks I have left to get this bike back on the road are small but I am really struggling for time :bawl:
Anyway, today;
Helicoil kit eventually arrived :GRR: so I set about repairing the M7 thread for the Rocker Cover.
In the kit you get a Drill Bit, a Tap and the tools to insert the coil and to break off the tang (the small lug used to locate in the tool to wind the coil into the new thread.
I read somewhere that it's bad to fill your engine with bits of swarf so I took the part off that needed attention.
Drill out the damaged thread and tap a new one using the Tap provided
(https://farm4.staticflickr.com/3843/14924828922_95e370614c.jpg)
Load the coil onto the tool

Slick.
I've never done that before, so now I'll view you as an expert should the time come.
-
I'm not an expert at anything. Unless I'm selling my services to a paying employer, then I invented the solution :)
-
... I read somewhere that it's bad to fill your engine with bits of swarf ...
That's just an "Old Wives Tale", it will be alright :liar:
-
Tidy repair, Mr. Rat :thumb:
If Custard is on the road come August bank holiday, I'll convince you to let me have a spin on it :auto-dirtbike:
-
Complete!!! You may well find her front and centre with a FOR SALE sign (assuming I haven't sold her before next week) :)
-

Naturally.

It tidied up pretty nicely, I'm almost impressed. Almost

Custard is For Sale in ASDA (Other food retail outlets are available).
