Red light on Vee
« on: May 12, 2016, 08:27:32 »
Gents any ideas greatly received,
My red light on the clock coupled with the FI has just started to come on but only when the bike has been running for a while then put on to side stand whilst running. It doesn't appear at all when bike is upright either riding or on centre stand, but as soon as its on the side stand(within about 10 seconds) the light comes on. It goes away as soon as ignition is off and bike restarted.
It may be a complete coincidence but the last two weeks I've changed where I fill up, been putting shell fuel save(not the Vpower stuff).
Oh and I washed it at the weekend
Oil level looks fine aswell
Bike is a K7 Vee GT?
Thanks

The red light is an attention getter because of the FI. It only warns of a oil pressure problem if the engine is running, there is no FI, and the oil can icon appears near the light. Ride the bike in dealer mode to find out the code associated with the FI and look for the problem associated with the code. http://www.vstrom.info/Smf/index.php/topic,7061.0.html

If you actually have a red light due to oil pressure loss, don't just write about it. Pull over as soon as it is safe to do so and turn off the engine. Every minute you ride with low oil pressure is a minute of extreme wear and soon damage to the engine. Low oil pressure is an almost unheard of problem unless something was badly done during an oil change or the rider never checks the oil for weeks at a time.

The oil is at the full line. The light is not on when riding only when stopped engine on then put on the side stand. only when Warm.
The red light is on (no oil can) and the Fi alternates with the time
Could this still be low oil?

It might be related but earlier I was having a look and instead of the red light the O/D illuminated...bike in Nuetral.
Could it be a problem with the TRE that's fitted? I'm going to take it off later and see what happens

It has nothing to do with oil and almost certainly not with the TRE. An FI indicates a problem with a fuel injection related sensor or the wiring to a sensor. Check the link I posted.

Think I'm sorted, I adjusted throttle about a week ago then when I changed fuel to shell it seem to run at lower revs so I adjusted the screw on the side of the bike to compensate for the lumpiness at tickover.
Well when I got home last night I left bike running to see what was going on and I could smell petrol from exhaust, never had that before.
As adjusting the throttle seemed to be the only real thing I had done I backed off the cables so the throttle was loose so I could start again.
Soon as I had done that the bike revved to about 2.5k revs.
Seems I had over cooked the throttle adjustment and used the screw to compensate and she obviously didn't like it.

Spoke to soon with the red light but I think its sorted now. Couldn't get any codes from dealer mode just kept coming up with C00. However, over last 2 days instead of the red light the O/D light kept coming on at random intervals, especially on the side stand. Took the Smart TRE I bought on ebay off and put it back to standard. So far so good. It would appear that the TRE was causing the issue.

Is there any way to test it off the bike?

That would do it.

Unknown to me my Varadero had a acumen gear indicator. The unit had come unclipped and gone into the fairing.
Water got in and the dash went haywire.
I was doing 8,000 rpm and 40mph sitting at the lights and the neutral light was flickering.
Unplugged it and all is well again.

A TRE "fools" the ECU into "thinking" the bike is always in a single gear. Fourth gear on a Vee is the only unrestricted gear. With the ECU "thinking" the bike is always in fourth, The OD light will never come on. A smart TRE has some extra circuitry to handle that while still doing the job.
