Custard TLC
« on: July 16, 2014, 11:38:50 »
This is Custard :shrug: a K2 Suzuki V-Strom DL1000 that I have picked up, it needs some TLC to get her roadworthy again.

The first task was to take the first four layers of grime off so I can see what's what. Lots of black parts returning to silver.

One Exhaust Stud has sheared and the other feels like it will. Any magical tips to get them out? The one already sheared has enough thread to grab with a pair of Mole Grips.

Next is draining the old fuel and fitting a new battery.

Plenty of heat usually does the trick - and as the engine finish is already pretty scabby, you won't do that any harm either....

I hear good things about Plus-gas.

It's in pretty good condition.

The previous owner lost enthusiasm with the bike when his head was turned for another (we all know how that goes)  <!-- s:) -->:)<!-- s:) -->

The combination of a few faults meant it was left unused for an extended period. I'm encouraged at how well she is cleaning up. I have removed the sheared studs, reassembled the exhaust (replacing one clamp) and replaced a blown sidelight (actually I replaced both while I was in there).

I even took her for a ride up the driveway  <!-- s:auto-dirtbike: -->:auto-dirtbike:<!-- s:auto-dirtbike: -->

I've optimistically booked her in for an MOT tomorrow, once she is through that I will start stripping  her. The Clutch Basket will be on its way to John Sharealike on Monday  <!-- s:fix: -->:fix:<!-- s:fix: -->

One of the sheared studs came out with heat and Plusgas, the other had to be drilled (although that went well, 7mm drill and then cleaned the thread with an 8mm tap)  :)

Just before taking her for an MOT I realised that there was no dip beam  :GRR:  went straight to the connector behind the Radiator and sure enough, lots of corroded terminals. An hour of cleaning later and 'let there be light'  :)

She went in for MOT this morning and passed without any advisories.  :lala:

However...

I took her for a blast when I got home and noticed the dip beam flick on and off a couple of times. She is going on the bench now for a strip down. Once I have all the Plastics and Tank off I will look at the look at the loom.

Jobs to do;

Strip
expose, clean and seal all wiring connections
Plugs, Oil, Filters
Check Valve Clearances (Diver is going to be my lovely assistant on Sunday)
Chain & Sprockets
Remove Clutch Basket and send to John Sharealike
Clean & paint Engine & Water Pump housing
Check/replace Water Pump Seals
Clean/Paint Radiators
Clean/Paint any corrosion

I have to remember that this is a K2 with 40k on the clock and don't want to spend a fortune on her but most of these jobs just require time rather than dosh.

Seeing as "strip" and "expose" are the first two jobs, then please don't photograph them.

However, keep the reports going on the rest of the work.  :)

OK, I had an intermittent dip beam problem, I opened up the usual suspects and cleaned and sealed.

The fault was in the right hand connector on this picture

There was one terminal that was too far gone so I cut the wire out of the connector, soldered and heat shrunk.

Then it was time to remove the Clutch Basket ready to send to John Sharealike
